A confidential email recently obtained by the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) encourages principals to closely monitor school employees for union activity. All Union activity is protected under federal and state law. The communication was written and distributed by Chicago Public School officials as a precursor to a strike.

This communication is equally troubling because today, as CTU members conducted informational picketing outside various schools, some principals threatened to discipline employees as instructed by CPS’ legal department, according to CTU organizers who spoke with those school administrators.

Informational picketing

This communication is equally troubling because today, as CTU members conducted informational picketing outside various schools, some principals threatened to discipline employees as instructed by CPS’ legal department, according to CTU organizers who spoke with those school administrators.

Dirty tricks by Mayor Rahm Emanuel's associates to discredit Chicago Teachers Union

The disturbing CPS directive instructs principals to report what CPS perceives as Union related activities “via E-Verify” and report the action as a “Harassment/Threat type incident.” It also reads: “We are asking you to report any activities that cause a disruption to the school day. Examples of such activity cited in the email include the following:

-Slowdowns of work
-Temporary or intermittent walk-outs or sit-downs
-Refusals to perform assigned duties
-“Sick outs” or other abuse of sick days
-“work to rule” actions where employees perform duties in accordance with the expired collective bargaining agreement
-Other job actions that undermine supervisory authority and deleteriously affect the mission and goals of the Chicago public school system…”

CTU President Karen GJ Lewis said, “I am highly disturbed by the contents of this email. We have been very open and honest about these negotiations and our efforts to prepare our members and the public for a potential strike. Chief among my concerns is what CPS plans to do with the information and how the database will be used.

Why is Mayor Emanuel working with the Tea Party?

“This directive could lead to intimidation of our public school educators, who are fighting for their voices to be heard,” she added.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

As soon as he gets on stage, have someone come up and take his mic away.

Then say we don't need your kind here anymore.  You want to bust unions and work for the 1%ers, the teabaggers are meeting in Tampa.  We don't need you, we don't want you.

a POS!  What a self-serving, lying bastard he has shown himself to be.

If they can't take the mic away from him, maybe some of the attendees can organize a Mic Check.

Can you just imagine how that union-busting creep would react!?!?

of a leader (or group of leaders) can affect labor relations so negatively.  I've only been in a near-strike situation once---it was a healthcare setting and I was not in a position covered by the bargaining unit so was an observer.  What became clear to me is that there were individuals on the management team who had decided that they were going to teach the RNs (it was their union negotiating a new contract) a lesson.  And to their credit, the RNs did not cave under the bullying of these individuals.  They took the organization right to the limit (the bargaining agreement expired at midnight and suddenly, very close to that time, management blinked and serious negotiations took place that did result in a new contract being ironed out by around 6:00 AM that morning.  I believe that had there not been a small group of arrogant Alpha males in that management team, that the strike preparations (which affected the entire organization) would never have occurred.  The lesson I took from that is that assholes will be assholes and sometimes they have to be stood up to.  Emanuel's personality is very close to what the jerks on the hospital's management team were like.  They lost big-time and after that showdown, they never again pushed for outrageous or unreasonable contract terms.  But it takes a hell of a lot of courage to pull something like this off and there is always the chance that it will blow up in the faces of the union leadership and union members.  Labor relations is not for the faint of heart.

And why did the people of Chicago vote for him?  Ever since the begining of Obama's admin and I heard some stuff he was advising Obama to do, I said to myself, this guy's not a real democrat. He's just riding coattails to get himself higher office. Seriously. Some of his advice has hurt us, (single payer, public option anyone?)
