Cross Posted at the Progressive Zionist

A few weeks ago, in the wake of the Aurora shootings I wrote a personal perspective regarding Guns and Gun Control here: Guns and Violence in America - A personal perspective. After that I asked friends on Facebook to read it and share their perspectives as well.

I was surprised but most people across the spectrum from Gun Owners to Non Gun Owners (of my friends) seemed to share this perspective. But I got an interesting comment from one of them who started talking about the "Great Gun Grab" being sponsored by the U.N. One thing he told me was that he was going to move to Israel when that happens (unfortunately for him he doesn't quite understand that Guns are highly controlled there but it is along the same lines as those who hate Obamacare moving to Canada), but the other thing he said was he might "hang out for when the revolution comes", and then suggested I buy a rifle.

My response was along the lines of... "Well, um.... ok" and I let it drop.

So today on Facebook I come across this posting from a Progressive Friend: Texas official warns of Obama civil war:

A Lubbock County, Texas, judge, the panhandle county's chief administrator, is asking for a tax increase to hire deputies for the inevitable civil war he believes would follow President Obama's re-election.

The way he puts it, Judge Tom Head wants to prepare for the "worst", which to him means "civil unrest, civil disobedience" and possible "civil war", according to a report from Fox 34 Lubbock

Judge Tom Head and Commissioner Mark Heinrich told the station this week that a 1.7 cent tax increase for the next fiscal year was necessary to prepare for many contingencies, including Obama's re-election. He also mentioned to the station that the county needs a pay increase is needed for the district attorney's office and more funds to pay for more sheriff's office deputies.

"He's going to try to hand over the sovereignty of the United States to the (United Nations), and what is going to happen when that happens?," Head asked the station during a Monday interview. "I'm thinking the worst. Civil unrest, civil disobedience, civil war maybe. And we're not just talking a few riots here and demonstrations, we're talking Lexington, Concord, take up arms and get rid of the guy."

According to Head, the second Obama term will see retaliation from the U.S. Government for open rebellion and that U.N. APC's (Armored Personnel Carriers) will be depositing U.N. Troops everywhere - apparently including Lubbock, Texas.

The Houston Free Press, Lubbock County Judge Tom Head: 5 Factors To Consider As You Protect Your Homeland From Obama's UN Invasion has a great snarky article which list the following issues:

5. The UFO factor

4. Obama's fifth column

3. Is a 1.7-cent increase really enough?

2. Where to defend first?

1. What should we call this army? (this last one explores the possibility of the name "Give 'em Head" - Heh).

Is this something we need to particularly worry about now? I think probably not, but, I find it interesting that there are people talking about this and that as crazed as the Right has become that this is part of conversation amongst elected officials. But not only that, this is also a meme fostered by such powerful groups as the NRA (National Rifle Association) who in a a Robo-call (I got this particular one) asked if I agreed with the U.N. Gun Take-away and was I willing to surrender to the U.N.

Anyway, I just thought this would make for interesting discussion, so... have at it.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

erupted into what local TV station KCBD calls ugliness when a Democratic Activist from Lubbock County, Sue Barrick, challenged Tom Head's comments about the coming civil war.

I, on the other hand, thought this was fairly hilarious. I bet it's the biggest crowd the Commissioners' Court has had in 10 years. Maybe more.

You think a 1.7% increase would pay for enough to STOP TEH OBAMA U.N. TEAM????

"Ah, the joy of living in Texas. Another delusional public official elected by a horribly ill-informed citizenry. Hmm, all that talk about preparing for the worst and he didn't even mention alien invasions or the zombie apocalypse? For shame. Still, he is allowed to express his views regardless of how utterly devoid of reality they may be. And seeing how many people support and agree with him, it's no wonder we have an idiot for a governor, who incidentally replaced the previous idiot in Austin. Hey, anyone seen Bigfoot lately while we are at it?"

The Bigfoot reference is due to the fact that I was at a rest stop this past weekend that had a display about Sasquatch sitings in East Texas. Seriously.

here is a response to my comment:

"I am thankful that we have leaders in government who are looking at all the possibilities and preparing to protect the public.....even if the issue is UFO's. When crises comes the people always look to the government to have been ready and provide."

Same guy a comment or two later:

"And As to you who think the Honorable Judge Head needs to go fishin...you simply have not done your home work or perhaps you are in a state of denial a was Germany when Hitler took over. "

Hitler and UFO's; I blame this on the History Channel.

  •  What does Mitt think about this? (2+ / 0-)

Well maybe Mitt is helping to fan the flames of this kind of conspiracy theory:

As he so often does, Romney had to negotiate between the establishment GOP and the tea party in providing a suitable answer on the U.N.

“There are some things that are good [about the U.N.],” Romney said. “There are a lot of things that are not good.”

Among the not-good things, he gave a subtle nod are a laundry list of fringe conspiracies:

“Turning to the United Nations to tell us how to raise our kids, or whether we can have the Second Amendment rights that our Constitution gave us, I mean these, that is the wrong way to go, all right. Do not cede sovereignty, I’m happy to talk to people there, I’m not willing to give American sovereignty in any way shape or form to the United Nations or any other body, we are a free nation, we fought for freedom and independence, we’re going to keep freedom and independence.”  TPM 18-Jul-2012

Is this guy, I would assume, is an attorney and is in good standing with the Texas bar, that he is therefore highly educated with at least 4 years of college and 3 years of law school, yet he can believe this crap.

doesn't cross the line from satire to advocacy of violence.

Ultimately, the only thing that matters with respect to preserving choice is who will be nominating the next Supreme Court Justices.

I am OK with the government action in the Waco siege and I think that there are a bunch of nuts who are as crazy as David Koresh and could require that the government be willing to do as much as it did in Waco.

I'm not advocating violence.  I am advocating appropriate government action while using possibly inflammatory language.

        •  Seriously? Waco was a gigantic federal fuckup. (0+ / 0-)

76 people died in that fire. You won't find any empathy from me when it comes to their crazy, whacked out, nutjob theistic views but there were so many mistakes made by the BATFE and FBI it's ridiculous.

Do I think that we should treat internal threats seriously? Hell yes I do. Do I think Waco is a sterling example? Fuck no.

The UN doesn't have any troops of its own, just for starters. They rely on contingents lent to them by the member states. Meanwhile, the United States has the most powerful military in history. 50¢ out of every dollar spent on this planet for defense goes to our Armed Forces.

Even if you entertain, just for the giggles, that this were a possibility, that the UN could overcome or co-opt the United States military, a force capable of doing that wouldn't be concerned about some two-bit hack militia in Crazy Country.

    Fuck me, it's a leprechaun.
