Tue Aug 28, 2012 at 9:10 PM PT (David Jarman): One more AP call in Arizona: in the Dem primary in AZ-01, it's called for Ann Kirkpatrick in her comeback attempt. She'll face Jonathan Paton in November.
Tue Aug 28, 2012 at 9:13 PM PT (David Jarman): Looking a little further down the ballot, it looks like the comeback attempt for Russell Pearce is failing. The former GOP state Senate leader, notoriously recalled last year, is losing the Republican primary in open SD-25 to Bob Worsley (the founder of SkyMall), 57-43. In HD-01's R primary, where two people advance, it looks like state House speaker Andy Tobin will survive, along with Karen Fann; Lori Klein seems to have drawn the short straw, at 41-34-25.
Tue Aug 28, 2012 at 9:18 PM PT (David Jarman): Things look a smidge closer in the Republican primary in AZ-06, with David Schweikert now leading Ben Quayle 53-47 with 53% reporting. Next door in AZ-05, Matt Salmon leads that GOP primary 55-45, with 70% reporting.
Tue Aug 28, 2012 at 9:19 PM PT (David Jarman): In AZ-09, Kyrsten Sinema still holds the lead in the Dem primary, ahead of David Schapira and Andrei Cherny 42-30-27 with 56% reporting. On the GOP side, Vernon Parker still leads the crowded field with a whopping 23% of the vote.
Tue Aug 28, 2012 at 9:27 PM PT (David Jarman): Who would've thought that we'd see Ron Barber's race called before Raul Grijalva's? At any rate, the AP has finally called the Dem primary in AZ-03. Grijalva beats former state legislator Amanda Aguirre 66-25.
Tue Aug 28, 2012 at 9:48 PM PT (David Jarman): There's no ganja break in Arizona, and we haven't fallen asleep, either... it's simply a matter of the overall percentages not having changed a bit even as they add more votes. In AZ-05, it's still 54-46 for Salmon, with 76% reporting. In AZ-06, it's still 53-47 for Schweikert, with 67% reporting. In AZ-09, with 70% reporting, it's still 42-30-27 on the Dem side with Sinema in the lead, and Parker on top at 23% for the GOP. And in SD-25, with 40% reporting, Pearce is losing 57-43.
Tue Aug 28, 2012 at 9:59 PM PT (David Jarman): Per his Facebook page, it sounds like Andrei Cherny has conceded in AZ-09's Dem primary. No call yet though.
Tue Aug 28, 2012 at 10:01 PM PT (David Jarman): And now, via Twitter, there's word that Ben Quayle conceded to David Schweikert in AZ-06's GOP primary. Brock Landers, we barely knew ye...
Tue Aug 28, 2012 at 10:10 PM PT (David Jarman): Rogue dentist Paul Gosar looks like he'll be staying in Congress, despite the bumpy transition to AZ-04, probably owing a big debt to Paul Babeu's implosion. The AP has called the race for Gosar; he beats Ron Gould 50-32.
Tue Aug 28, 2012 at 10:18 PM PT (David Jarman): Two more AP calls, though neither is surprising given the prior concessions. They call AZ-09 (D) in favor of Kyrsten Sinema, and AZ-06 (R) in favor of David Schweikert. (Ben Quayle's mommy couldn't save him this time.) That really only leaves us with AZ-05 (R), where Matt Salmon is clearly in control, and AZ-09 (R), where the numbers have been stable for hours but Vernon Parker's lead is paper-thin.
Tue Aug 28, 2012 at 10:23 PM PT (David Jarman): In case you were following the sad tale of Russell Pearce, that race is over too. The AP has called SD-25's Republican primary for Bob Worsley, who wins 56-44.
Tue Aug 28, 2012 at 10:31 PM PT: AZ-05's done-zo, too. Matt Salmon gets the pretty red checkmark, with what is currently a 54-46 lead.
Tue Aug 28, 2012 at 10:57 PM PT (David Jarman): We may be waiting a long time for a call in the night's last race, the GOP primary in AZ-09. It's up to 96% reporting, with Vernon Parker still at 23, Wendy Rogers at 21, and Martin Sepulveda at 20. Parker's lead over Rogers is exactly 800 votes.
12:13 AM PT (David Jarman): Still no call in AZ-09 (R), but we've got 99% reporting, in fact, 139 of 141 precincts. It's Vernon Parker at 23, Wendy Rogers at 21, Martin Sepulveda at 20, and Travis Grantham at 18. Parker's lead over Rogers is 807 votes (8,849 to 8,042), so unless those last two precincts have a ton of residents and they're all enthusiastic Rogers backers, it looks like Parker will advance to face Kyrsten Sinema in November.
