If it were completely up to you, what kind of fiscal policy would you put forward? What kind of taxation reform do you care the most about?
I would like to have some feedback from the community about a running poll on taxation.
Note: I am personally deeply committed to improve our democracies (in the US and world wide). I am working to make our society better especially for the sake of future generations. (as a non-US citizen, I cannot actively campaign for Obama, nor can I donate money, but it doesn't prevent me from doing everything I can to further the progressive causes you and I care about!)
I represent a tiny liberal and progressive community. The members of the community have just started drafting a community manifesto which represent a consensus opinion among us.
In that context, I have just drafted a new poll about taxation. Obviously, the poll should offer a wide variety of opinions, but it also should offer the best policies that progressive people like you and me should wish for.
The current options in the poll are thus:
- Wherever practical, behavior that is harmful to the society (like creating pollution) should be taxed.
- The income tax is unconstitutional and should be abolished.
- The rich should be taxed more heavily than the poor.
- We should have a progressive income tax.
- All federal taxes should be abolished.
- People's labor should not be taxed at all.
The list of options is certainly not yet definitive. In fact, members can add new options at any time. But I wanted to start with a fair array of possibilities.
So, I would like to ask you two questions, with the most important first:
1) In your ideal world, what kind of fiscal policy and fiscal reform would you push forward? What general guiding principle would you adopt?
2) What options would you add to our poll. The poll itself is published here.
Also, I would like to draw your attention to two running polls that are open to every one. No registration is required. Please, cast your vote in the following polls:
