This is so predictable! The media organ for the Republican Party and their party's sponsors the national Chamber of Commerce and the National Association of Manufactures trots out its annual attack Unions.
Time for workers to take back Labor Day
By Matt Patterson
September 03, 2012
For a holiday little more than a century old, Labor Day’s origins are surprisingly opaque.
Patterson starts out questioning the legitimacy of the holiday by casting aspersions on the origin of Labor Day as an idea that sprang from the unions.
Unfortunately, as one might expect from a holiday that sprung from the brow of organized labor, Labor Day celebrations all too often degrade into a celebration of unions rather than individual workers, the vast majority of whom, after all, are not members of a union.
And for good reason -- unions have a long history of taking advantage of their members... blah blah blah.
Needless to say the grim and violent history of employers taking advantage of their workers is a subject that is studiously avoided by Fox and to a lesser extent by the MSM in general. Labor history is no longer taught in US schools, its become a facet of American History that has largely disappeared down the memory hole.
In fact, it is the coercive nature of modern unionism makes it so offensive to the sensibilities of a free people.
Naturally the naked coercive power that employers routinely use on their own employees doesn't get a mention on Fox News. Employers have spawned a whole Union Avoidance industry for consultants who coach employers on how to best coerce their employees into opposing union representation.
...teachers’ unions’ stranglehold on public education protect lazy and incompetent educators to the detriment of students languishing in our failing schools.
What does a union do? At its most basic level unions give employees a voice in how their workplace is run. Ask almost anyone if they think they should have more of a voice in how their workplace is run, and they will almost always say yes.
What could be more American?
Yet Fox News demonizes unions and democracy in the workplace relentlessly.
Even on Labor Day.
There's also a thread featuring this story up at Fox Nation. Here are some of the comments:

Karl Marx invented Labor Day.

Do you mean the "Workers" are actually going to "WORK" on this federal Socialist Holiday? Or do you mean that they are going to go union where they can spend labor day and a lot of other days telling "The Man" that they don't have to work because they got a UNION and UNIONS don't need no stinkin WORK

Unfortunately, most of the folks really getting a holiday are government workers and union pigs. The average middle class worker and business owner is open for business today.

Think it's time for the workers to strike against their unions. Guess that will never happen...

Sigh.
