I first shook President Clinton's hand at UCLA in 1992. I took off from my job at UCLA Medical Center to see his speech up the block. Like every Clinton speech, he knew better than anyone how to explain the most complex and emotional elements of daily life and politics and show how they relate to your daily lives. Like no one else in our public view, this man knows how to connect to all of us, what we feel and how we see the world.
In short, watching Bill Clinton speak is always like ice cream. It's an experience. It's emotional, exciting, tasty and fulfilling. Unlike ice cream, it also has substance that lasts long after the initial indulgence.
Nobody could truly articulate our place in history the way this man has. Hopefully, we're not so separated in our beliefs and our hatred for the other side that those who disagree cannot stretch enough to see what is true.
Clinton is a national treasure. Anyone who has ever seen him speak knows this. It's unfortunate that a portion of the public doesn't recognize what is true—but, then again, the truth is not all that important to some of the public. Lets continue to hope they're not the majority of the public.
