I’m on the Mainland for a week.  I had dinner with friends last night at their yacht club.  We retired to the bar and someone suggested seeing if a rerun of the Presidents speech was on TV.  I suggested trying MSNBC.

MSNBC had some talking heads on so someone else said to try FOX.  More talking heads.  One of my friends stated the guy on the left was a liberal.  I said I didn’t think Fox had any liberals on.  My friend said they had two.

The President’s speech started.  It was like I was sitting on the couch at Fox And Friends.  The crowd around me parrotted every Fox talking point ever broadcast.  I so wanted to talk about the survey that showed watching Fox makes you stupid but decided it just wasn’t worth it.

One comment I kept hearing over and over was, “Something’s going to happen.”

What’s going to happen?  Inca curse?  Planet X finally swings around from the other side of the sun?  Paul Ryan tells the truth for 24 hours?

I’m pretty sure the only thing that will happen is the President will be reelected and he’ll stop pussy footing around the GORPers.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

All they all "investor class"?  None on Social Security or Medicare?  I doubt if any are union members, teachers, cops or firefighters.  So they are only concerned about themselves and their own stock portfolios? Nice bunch of friends you have there.

I've got friends from all social strata.  I don't judge them by their income bracket.  Some have boat jobs, some have boats.

It makes for an interesting mix with lots of different opinions.  I do worry about some of them and they probably worry about me.

    •  There's a Huge Range of Yacht Clubs. (3+ / 0-)

Here in the Lake Erie area they range from sailing clubs for small trailerable boats owned by some blue and white collar people like professionals and such starting maybe 150% to double median income I'm guessing, up to open water major urban yacht clubs of people who in the classic old time yacht sense barely need to think about money.

There's a sailing club I know on the Lake that costs only a few hundred a year to belong to. Given that you can pick up a decent 2-4 seater trailerable boat for $1,000 and less, especially if you don't intend to race, that's a very middle class friendly kind of club.

  •  I strongly doubt they have any real liberals (3+ / 0-)

However, they may occasionally have FOX/FAUX "liberals" on screen.

Remember HANNITY & colmes? Alan Colmes' only job there was to be regularly kicked around by Sean Hannity without ever making a strong and convincing case.

I can't offhand think of any other "liberals" they have on tap (I get my masochistic kicks following conservative "thought" elsewhere than FOX), but IIRC Shep Smith has been known to occasionally tell the truth or sound sane, so maybe this friend of yours was referring to him.  If so, I'm pretty sure that alone doesn't make him a liberal.

    in the 60's and 70's.

It'd be interesting to see where that crowd is on climate change, because the sailors among them have to use the weather as their engine, and those who race multi-day series or open water long distance must also plan for the progression of weather systems over time.

I can tell you that here in the Lake Erie region the weather systems these past 4 years since I returned, are quite different from 40 years ago. I'm no longer in the yacht club end of the economy but I do have a small sloop and a little sailing dinghy that I get out in regularly.

My local knowledge from the 60's would be pretty useless today if I were still competing, other than for the sea breeze / land breeze cycle that happens on days when there's no major weather system moving through.
