Mitt Romney is at it again. Twisting and spewing words that Conspiracy Theorists gobble up as truth. This time its about US Coins. Romney makes up baseless stuff to rile the base. Is he running to be Conspirator-In-Chief?
Mitt Romney today, from The Hill
Romney began a campaign appearance in Virginia Beach, Va. on Saturday by reciting the Pledge of Allegiance before turning to the platform controversy.
“That pledge says “under God,” and I will not take God out of our platform,” Romney said to cheers. “I will not take God off our coins, and I will not take God out of my heart.”
But Romney got punked on the coin issue. One of his speech writers must gaze at conspiracy theory websites or something. There has been a Godless coin CT story circulating for awhile now.
Long story short, in 2007 the law was changed regarding Presidential coins. Specifically, the new law changed the location of "In God We Trust" from the edge of the coins to the front of the coins. And, low and behold, in 2007 the US Mint "inadvertently" released approximately 50,000 coins without "In God We Trust"
AND THE ABOVE LAUNCHED A CONSPIRACY THEORY, AND AN EMAIL both of which have been discredited by Snopes and FactCheck.org.
And then some people at the DNC, without asking the President, decided to omit God from the Democratic Platform. The President insisted that God be returned to the Democratic Platform, or so I think the story goes.
This, of course, led to some boos about the word God being IN the platform at the Convention which provided ample fodder for the Right Wing to discredit the Godless Democrats.
Of course, we need to set aside the Constitution for this election. To our atheist friends, the Constitution Amendment #1 does not apply to you this year. My apologies.
That said, I must admit that I am a believer. As a believer, I've never understood why "In God We Trust" is printed on what ardent Christians call "filthy lucre."
And Mitt Romney, who has no record of success as Governor, no real plans to improve the majority of American lives, and even plans to do some things that could make life worse for many, with his sabor rattling against Russia and China seems to deem he needs to invoke GOD alot in order to win.
With the attitudes of some Christian groups' attitudes towards other Christian groups, I would think Mitt Romney would try not to bring attention to God. What a quandry for Mitt, et al.
The only base Romney seems to have left (no pun) is the staunch, white, rich Christian base. Or so he must think.
Against ALL odds, there is now a new caucus: Mormons For Obama! LDS Democratic Caucus. I think Romney/Ryan and certainly the horrid laws being passed in Utah inspired this. Finally. I will be joining.
PUNKED?
All this said, it is odd that the US MINT won't display close up views of the 2012 $1 Presidential coins in question here. or here or here.
Fortunately, the 2010 coins viewed here and here clearly display "In God We Trust" again dispelling the RW Conspiracy Theory and MITT ROMNEY'S RIDICULOUS REBEL ROUSING TODAY.
Which leaves me with one question for our uber religious GOP friends:
"What would Jesus do? Would Jesus put the name of His Father on coins?"
