Kossacks, Alma (UID 1709) has been around dailykos a very very long time (Oct 16, 2003) & considers herself a lurker. Alma is an original member of the EDR Team which started in August of 2006. That is how I met Alma. We have been online buddies since.
Sometime early August I got a kosmail from randallt asking if I wanted to do EDR again. 7-10 days went by & I hadn't heard anything so I e-mailed R & Alma. It was August 17th because I save e-mails.
I got this reply from Alma:
Oh yeah, I’m in.
At least as long as I’m able to do it. There’s really no easy way to tell you, but I have breast cancer and will be starting radiation therapy somewhere around the beginning of Sept. It was caught really early and seemed to be contained, so it is considered Stage 0, but it was a Grade 3 which means it was a more aggressive form. They took the lump out and checked 2 sentinel lymph nodes which were clear, so it probably hasn’t spread. Once the swelling and bruising from the surgery go away they’ll start the radiation. I’ll be going 5 days a week for 5 weeks. My therapy will be in the mornings so I should be able to do EDR stuff in the afternoon. The only side effects I’ll probably have is really bad irritation like a sunburn to the area treated and fatigue. As long as the fatigue isn’t too bad I’ll keep working on the EDR.
And I agree we should move it to email. The kos message system leaves much to be desired, especially for group messages.
Love You Steve,
Alma
I was needless to say Shocked with this news.
I spent a few minutes thinking what I should do & what to say to Alma.
I am not good with this kind of thing.
So I wrote Sara R a kosmail & asked what it took to get Alma on the Quilt list.
Sara replied quickly she would write Alma.
I left it alone, I said to myself I will let Alma do her thing.
Well that all changed today ! ! !
You see I got another e-mail from Alma about her treatment.
It starts tomorrow.
So I wrote Alma & cc R & his better half Joy and asked them to help me get Alma to do something about that Quilt. Well it took Alma 5 hours to reply.
Did Sara tell you what I had to say? And I mean every word of it.
Here’s a copy paste from the kos message system:
So I read all this:
Community Quilt for you?

Alma -- a friend of yours tells me you have breast cancer and he would like to see you get a community quilt. Is that something you would like? Many have found them to be very supportive when getting treatment.
It would be a pleasure to make one for you...
Sara

Hi Sara,
After thinking overnight on it I'm still not sure. Don't get me wrong, I would love one of your beautiful quilts. I really, really would. It would be so nice to have with these Michigan Winters. And I know it would make my friends feel better to be helping me in some way. Which they already do just by being themselves, but they are pretty humble and probably don't realize that.
Now the buts....
I think there are a lot more people here who need one more than I do. I'm lucky enough to have family living close by if I need anything. Some people don't have that.
And mine was caught very early (DCIS Stage 0, Grade 3 and the sentinel lymph nodes they took were negative) so the lumpectomy and radiation should take care of it. Some of our people weren't so lucky and have either long recoveries ahead of them or have a terminal illness.
Then there's the more personal aspect of my friends. While I'm pretty quiet here and don't have a lot of friends, the ones I do have huge, huge hearts, but not much money and I'm afraid they would put in more than they could really afford. And I know you sometimes don't get enough on some of the quilts and I don't want you having those problems either and with me being more of a lurker than a poster it would be more likely to be a problem, not only with funding, but with getting messages for the quilt too.
So while I'm leaning no right now I'd like a bit longer to think about it. Hopefully I'll have a definitive answer for you tonight. And internet to let you know. We are switching service today and I should have it back up by tonight, but with Murphys Law out there you never know. ;)
Hugs,
Alma
So I left it alone 3 weeks. we are back to I want Alma to have a quilt.
I'm as stubborn as she is too !
her reply to all this tonight is:
You guys mean more to me than any quilt. I carry all of you around with me all the time. Especially at EDR time and I’ll be done with my treatments before we’re done with this years run.
Its about time for me to go pick Katie up. I’ve been on the move most of the day. Just got back from taking my son to get a new pair of clothes to wear to his new job. A crappy Walmart job, but its better than nothing.
Love You,
Alma
I still don't know the right way to do this.
I've cried a few times.
I've got mad a few times over the last 3 weeks.
I wrote her a reply tonight & said I would send my shift to her in the AM.
I have a cold & needed to hit the sheets.
I slept for a couple hours & woke up with Alma on my mind & thought about what I was going to do.
As you can see I made up my mind.
I'm sorry kosland I did this the way I have. But really I'm not.
I love you Alma.
