I thought it was a major gaffe or worse than a gaffe when Romney made no mention of our troops in Afghanistan or any mention of the military at all in his acceptance speech. As a matter of fact, I wrote that this incident among others makes him unfit to command. Yesterday he went on to prove that my assertion was on the money, on the rmoney even.
I have been trying to follow the recent events in Libya and Egypt. The events as I know them are tragic. A diplomat and 3 other embassy officials dead and two soldiers on a mission to rescue them. The initial reports cited a movie posted on line as a cause for the anger. Some reports are now out that the attack was planned in retaliation for Al Qaeda deaths.
I don't believe the reasons for violence in this case are the most important issue. Violence isn't exactly a logical thing or prone to reason. It was of course reckless to post videos that are designed to make extremists angry and violent. It isn't hard to imagine what posting a video that criticizes Mohammed would end up doing. But, ultimately the actions of the people that perpetrated the violence are the ones that need to shoulder the responsibility for their actions.
The situation in the Middle East is volatile to say the least. Even Peggy Noonan said in such cases it is better to use cooling words or to say nothing. But, Mitt Romney has used his soap box to not only lie, but to throw more fuel on the fire. He surely knew or should have known he was lying about anyone apologizing. But, in his uncaring fashion he went ahead and slandered the President and slandered people that were under attack and who would soon be murdered. So far instead of admitting he made a mistake he is doubling down and insisting that he would uphold American values and not apologize for them. So far I see no evidence that anyone is apologizing for American values or anything else American. But, Mitt Romney has made a point of lying about this and continuing the meme that American might is right no matter what. I hope that people wake up soon and understand the dangers Mitt's rhetoric hold and ask him to step down from his campaign.
