We no longer need to wonder when the "real" Romney will stand up. He has. He has stood up and spoken with conviction and contempt. Conviction about his belief that half of this nation's people are not real hard working American's. Just those on the dole.
Our Veterans. Our Senior Citizens. Our disabled children and loved ones. Our family members and neighbors who have been looking for work for months if not years. Our families who have fallen from the middle class and depend on food stamps. Our working poor, juggling two jobs to keep a roof over their children's heads. Our loved ones suddenly without a job, without health insurance and desperately ill.
Yes, all of these and more, make up the half of America that Romney speaks of with such contemptuous untruths.
The veil has been lifted. The questions answered. America, here is the man who thinks he's entitled to the Presidency of the United States.
There is no lie too small or large that can not be used - repeatedly. There is no opportunity, no matter how tragic and unfolding, that cannot be grasped to fit a pre-ordained narrative. There is no one whose vote he will not court - no matter how racist, theocratic, misogynistic, or economically dangerous to our country their view points may be.
Caught in the act of selling his soul, Mitt Romney revealed he had none to sell.
So here we are, horrified and outraged. Our country made less by what the Republican Party thought fitting to lead this great nation.
It's a stain on our national conscience, one that needs cleaning. Half of our people have been cavalierly discarded. Thrown away like rubbish by a man who says he wants to be President of the United States.
No, Mr. Romney. You do not want to be President of the American People. We are a messy, unruly, complicated bunch. We're also amazingly generous and kind. Thoughtful and silly. Hateful and loving. Willfully stupid, stunningly brilliant, and everything in between. Courageous and cowardly. Large hearted. Narrow minded. We come in all shades of skin tone and size of heart.
It takes a great heart, a great spirit, to truly care about all of us. And you, Mr. Romney, do not begin to measure up.
You are NOT The man who has always, in spite of everything thrown at him, believed in the American people - all of us.
That man said this in 2004.
...it’s not enough for just some of us to prosper. For alongside our famous individualism, there’s another ingredient in the American saga.....
A belief that we’re all connected as one people. If there is a child on the south side of Chicago who can’t read, that matters to me, even if it’s not my child. If there is a senior citizen somewhere who can’t pay for her prescription and has to choose between medicine and the rent, that makes my life poorer, even if it’s not my grandmother. If there’s an Arab American family being rounded up without benefit of an attorney or due process, that threatens my civil liberties. It’s that fundamental belief—I am my brother’s keeper. I am my sister’s keeper—that makes this country work. It’s what allows us to pursue our individual dreams and yet still come together as one American family. E pluribus unum: “Out of many, one.”
Yet even as we speak, there are those who are preparing to divide us, the spin masters, the negative ad peddlers who embrace the politics of anything goes. Well, I say to them tonight, there is not a liberal America and a conservative America—there is the United States of America. There is not a black America and a white America and Latino America and Asian America; there’s the United States of America. The pundits like to slice-and-dice our country into Red States and Blue States; Red States for Republicans, Blue States for Democrats. But I’ve got news for them, too. We worship an awesome God in the Blue States, and we don’t like federal agents poking around in our libraries in the Red States. We coach Little League in the Blue States and have gay friends in the Red States. There are patriots who opposed the war in Iraq and there are patriots who supported it. We are one people, all of us pledging allegiance to the stars and stripes, all of us defending the United States of America........
While you dismiss and demean half of the American people, another man has never stopped caring for the whole American family.
The man who spoke in 2004 said this in September of 2012.
....This is the choice we now face. This is what the election comes down to. Over and over, we've been told by our opponents that bigger tax cuts and fewer regulations are the only way, that since government can't do everything, it should do almost nothing. If you can't afford health insurance, hope that you don't get sick. (Murmurs of disapproval.) If a company releases toxic pollution into the air your children breathe, well, that's the price of progress. If you can't afford to start a business or go to college, take my opponent's advice and borrow money from your parents. (Laughter, mixed cheers and boos, applause.)
You know what, that's not who we are. That's not what this country is about. As Americans, we believe we are endowed by our Creator with certain inalienable rights, rights that no man or government can take away. We insist on personal responsibility, and we celebrate individual initiative. We're not entitled to success. We have to earn it. We honor the strivers, the dreamers, the risk- takers, the entrepreneurs who have always been the driving force behind our free enterprise system, the greatest engine of growth and prosperity that the world's ever known.
But we also believe in something called citizenship — (cheers, applause) — citizenship, a word at the very heart of our founding, a word at the very essence of our democracy, the idea that this country only works when we accept certain obligations to one another and to future generations.
We believe that when a CEO pays his autoworkers enough to buy the cars that they build, the whole company does better. (Cheers, applause.)
We believe that when a family can no longer be tricked into signing a mortgage they can't afford, that family's protected, but so is the value of other people's homes — (cheers, applause) — and so is the entire economy. (Applause.)
We believe the little girl who's offered an escape from poverty by a great teacher or a grant for college could become the next Steve Jobs or the scientist who cures cancer or the president of the United States — (cheers, applause) — and it is in our power to give her that chance. (Cheers, applause.)
We know that churches and charities can often make more of a difference than a poverty program alone. We don't want handouts for people who refuse to help themselves, and we certainly don't want bailouts for banks that break the rules. (Cheers, applause.)
We don't think the government can solve all of our problems, but we don't think the government is the source of all of our problems — (cheers, applause) — any more than our welfare recipients or corporations or unions or immigrants or gays or any other group we're told to blame for our troubles — (cheers, applause) — because — because America, we understand that this democracy is ours.
We, the people — (cheers) — recognize that we have responsibilities as well as rights; that our destinies are bound together; that a freedom which asks only, what's in it for me, a freedom without a commitment to others, a freedom without love or charity or duty or patriotism, is unworthy of our founding ideals, and those who died in their defense. (Cheers, applause.)
As citizens, we understand that America is not about what can be done for us. It's about what can be done by us, together — (cheers, applause) — through the hard and frustrating but necessary work of self-government. That's what we believe.
So you see, the election four years ago wasn't about me. It was about you. (Cheers, applause.) My fellow citizens — you were the change. (Cheers, applause.)
You're the reason there's a little girl with a heart disorder in Phoenix who'll get the surgery she needs because an insurance company can't limit her coverage. You did that. (Cheers, applause.)
You're the reason a young man in Colorado who never thought he'd be able to afford his dream of earning a medical degree is about to get that chance. You made that possible. (Cheers, applause.)
You're the reason a young immigrant who grew up here and went to school here and pledged allegiance to our flag will no longer be deported from the only country she's ever called home — (cheers, applause) — why selfless soldiers won't be kicked out of the military because of who they are or who they love, why thousands of families have finally been able to say to the loved ones who served us so bravely, welcome home. (Cheers, applause.) Welcome home. You did that. You did that. (Cheers, applause.) You did that....
That man, the man who has never lost faith in us, never disparaged us, is President Barack Obama.
We do have a choice to make this November, Mr. Romney. You have made that abundantly clear. The irony is, we don't need you, but you need us very badly. You need the dish washers and limousine drivers. You need the cooks, waiters and busboys. You need the medical technicians and grounds keepers. You need sanitation workers and carpenters. Your life style depends upon the very people you view so contemptuously.
But here's the thing. This Nation is waking up to the fact that we don't want you. We don't want a President who thinks so little of the very people who are this country.
The people you think so contemptuously of, Mr. Romney, are going to make sure you are resoundingly defeated in November.
We're going to move heaven and earth to re-elect President Obama. Unlike you, he's a man who has never stopped fighting for us. Together we can create miracles. A landslide win in November will only be the start.
Here is the response to Romney's true opinion of us from BARACKOBAMA.com/TRUTHTEAM
Mitt Romney told his wealthy donors that he thinks nearly half of all Americans view themselves as "victims" who won't take responsibility for their lives—and that's why they support President Obama. Unlike Romney, the President stands up for all Americans.
