Toronto Blue Jays shortstop Yunel Escobar is in really hot water after a homophobic slur was found on his eye black during this past Saturday's game against the Boston Red Sox. The Jays lost that game in question 3-2. It read the highly despicable term "tú ere maricón" (or in correct Spanish form, "tú eres un maricón"), which in English is the very offensive phrase "you are a faggot."
JoeMyGod:
Toronto Blue Jays shortstop Yunel Escobar took the field on Saturday with "You are a faggot" written in Spanish in his eye black.
Escobar was drafted into the Major League by Atlanta in 2005 and was traded to Toronto in 2010. Last year he signed a two-year contract extension worth $10M. Also last year a Change.org petition was launched asking the Blue Jays to join the eight other MLB teams to make an It Gets Better video, but that has not yet happened.
Blue Jays' statement on Escobar, via BlueJays.mlb.com:
The Toronto Blue Jays do not support discrimination of any kind nor condone the message displayed by Yunel Escobar during Saturday’s game. The club takes this situation seriously and is investigating the matter.
Alex Anthopoulos, Sr. VP Baseball Operations and General Manager will be available to the media tomorrow afternoon at Yankee Stadium and we expect him to be joined by Yunel Escobar, Manager John Farrell and Coach Luis Rivera. Details and location for the media availability will be announced tomorrow.
