This bit of Romney's incredibly awkward last-minute press conference stuck with me:
...the president's approach is attractive to people who aren't paying taxes because frankly my discussion about lowering taxes isn't as attractive to them and therefore I'm not likely to draw them in to my campaign.
This tells me everything I need to know (and frankly, already knew) about Mitt Romney.
He thinks only in terms of money, only in terms of the bottom line.
He is proposing a 20% income tax cut, so of course people who don't pay much in income taxes aren't going to vote for him. Because, he is essentially admitting, he has nothing else to offer them.
He isn't promising to make the nation's education system better, or to improve our infrastructure, or to be a champion for peace in the world. He isn't going to address climate change or civil rights. He isn't going to make life better or easier for anybody who won't benefit from his 20% OFF SALE.
That's all this campaign is to him... a chance to buy 51% of the votes for 20% off on the dollar. And if you're not eligible for that discount, you are useless to him.
