GUS (Gave Up Smoking) is a community support diary for Kossacks in the midst of quitting smoking. Any supportive comments, suggestions or positive distractions are appreciated. If you are quitting or thinking of quitting, please -- join us! We kindly ask that politics be left out.
You can also click the GUS tag to view all diary posts, or access the GUS Library at dKosopedia for a great list of stop-smoking links. Check it out! Want to make sure you never miss us? Follow (♥) the GUS tag to keep GUS in your Stream. It's just that easy!
A message to ALL quitters and would-be quitters. You don't have to avoid GUS if you have a failed quit or haven't quit yet. We won't give you a bad time and we consider the failed quits as "practice" for the real quit.
So I had this other topic all ready to go, one of those behavior modification ones with some links to journal articles, since I haven't done one in a while. I also wanted to review the Image Queue thing, since that happened while I wasn't writing a weekly diary, and upload some photos from my new camera to try it out...but I had a busier-than-expected weekend and I never even got the card out of the camera and my writing time got pushed back and pushed back until I was left with last night.
Well, that's fine, I suppose, unless The Universe has different plans for you. As it is, my poor, decrepit old laptop's wireless is kind of dodgy, and it keeps shutting itself off for no reason. It's unresponsive to the usual "repair this connection" fix, and usually requires a reboot to find the signal again. That's on a GOOD day. On a not-so-good one, when the broadband is taking a beating from Mother Nature, the signal is a bit more dodgy and the connection even less reliable.
Which brings us to last night.
We had some very high winds in these parts last night, along with some intermittent driving rain. It wasn't too bad on my walk home (almost no rain in the short time it takes to get there) but the wind picked up within the hour and I started hearing all sorts of bumps and bangs and crashes. Lights flickered a bit. Heard the water heater and dehumidifier kick in downstairs, and something is scraaaaaaping on the roof. First time in the new house during a storm, so I don't know what is "normal" and what isn't. It's too dark to see what's going on outside.
Unfortunately, my Scaredy Cat foster kitteh, Jack, is NOT a big fan of storms. He tends to run and hide from normal household noises, so he was not down with this bumpy crashy flickery storm noisiness at all.
I have a nice little claw mark in my arm thank to the first big Bump In The Night (which sent him from wary dozing to Panic Mode and shortly thereafter to Hiding Inside The Wing Chair Mode). I knew I was supposed to be writing but one more flicker and the connection cut out again (it's not the cable provider for a change; it's actually my computer fizzling), and between that and my hunt for A) a flashlight, just in case, and B) a Band-Aid, because OW KITTY YOUR CLAWS ARE SHARP!, well, plans to write my GUS diary were gone with the wind.
I'm also sleep-deprived again, since once the storm passed (around 4:40-5:00 AM), that apparently signaled ZOMG Super Awesome Happy Fun Tiems!!!eleventy!! to Jack, and he started yeowling and scratching at the door, succeeded in opening it (yikes...apparently opposable thumbs are not necessary!), jumped all over me, wanting a treat and some reassurance and attention and NOT SLEEP SILLY HUMAN BECAUSE O JOY THE BAD NOISES ARE NO MORE!
So we'll have the serious topic on another day, because today...today, we have this, written this morning over coffee and at lunch, and posted from my desk because I'm still not home. Ah well. Into every life some rain must fall, and some kittehs must get up way too damn early.

If you can spare a few hours, please consider hosting GUS! Not sure where to start? Go here to find out how to write a GUS diary the easy way, or just ask for help in the Butt Can (Tip Jar). Seriously, it doesn't have to include specific elements or require all sorts of fabulous diary formatting skills. The regulars will make sure stuff gets carried over from diary to diary, so if you want to just tell your story or provide an open thread and host for a few hours, that's cool too.
