We're six weeks out from the election, and Willard's getting his ass handed to him. He has six Saturdays left, and he spent one of them yesterday fundraising six million dollars in Beverly Hills, even though he has no shot at winning California. This is making absolutely no sense to me. Why isn't he speaking at a high school gym full of local GOP supporters in Baraboo, Wi. or Chillicothe, Oh.?
But financially, Romney has been doing well, as national finance chairman Spencer Zwick noted. The campaign has raised more than $500 million, he said, including nearly $25 million from the Los Angeles area. Romney also had big-dollar events in Del Mar and Hillsborough on this California fundraising swing.
Zwick's remarks confict with multiple reports over the past week that the Romney campaign is having a
cash crisis. I feel like I'm missing a piece of the puzzle. Maybe you can help me out, particularly if you have knowledge of how political fundraisers work.
When the campaign reports that an event pulled in $6 million, does this mean that the donors pledged to donate to the campaign, or that they actually came to the door with a check, money order, envelope of cash, or American Excess card? Because "pledging to donate" x amount of dollars is a whole lot different than actually handing over the money.
I just don't understand how someone, even a rich person, could fork over a pocket full of money to a lost cause. Now, if it's "pledging to donate" at some unspecified time in the future, that's a different kettle of fish.
