Today has been deemed National Voter Registration Day across the country with more than 1,000 organizations, businesses, and campaigns pushing for every eligible voter to register. Tech President explains the online and offline push and quotes Dan McSwain from Voto Latino, which is a major leader of the effort, as he compares the goal of today's efforts to the creation of Earth Day as a national holiday.
"The idea is to establish a holiday for people to participate in the democratic process," said Dan McSwain, vice president of digital campaigns for Voto Latino, invoking the Earth Day example. "This is the first time that anything like this has happened on this scale."
The Daily Kos community may be interested to engage with the efforts through the group
The Internet Votes. This project is brought to you by Fight For The Future, the same folks who played an integral part in the famous SOPA/PIPA internet blackout.
Many of the groups involved have created widgets, tip sheets, and sharing tools to spread the message to friends and family members who still need to register. Here is a short (and by no means comprehensive) list of some of the players in the space today where bloggers, activists, and registrants can gain access to the available tools. Whichever way you choose to engage, if you personally know unregistered voters or reach them through your blog or social presence, today is the day to get them involved.
Early voting begins soon in many states, which means getting voters out to the polls is no longer a process left for the final two weeks before the election. Registering and mobilizing voters through the internet could have massive impact on the upcoming GOTV efforts. The ground game is on now.
