Warehouse Worker
San Bernadino, CA:

Walmart can afford the best-paid public relations team, but spin doesn’t make a difference when it’s immediately contradicted by a leaked document.

Warehouse workers have raised serious concerns about broken equipment and high injury rates in the warehouse where we work moving Walmart merchandise. But when we’ve asked for working equipment, we have been retaliated against.

Walmart spokesperson Dan Fogelman said “workers' claims were ‘either unfounded, or if they are legitimate, have been addressed.’” (Los Angeles Times, Sep. 17)

But first, please DONATE:

But a management document from inside the warehouse tells a different story. A worker found a company checklist with Walmart’s logo on it that shows a lot of equipment is broken and even dangerous. The document is dated Aug. 8, but workers report that problems noted in the document still have not been fixed.  (You can view the document here.)

Send an Email (http://takeaction.walmartwatch.org/... ) to Walmart and NFI, the warehouse operator, and tell them they have been caught red handed.

This document proves Walmart and NFI know what the problems are, yet none of these serious hazards have been addressed.

Last week we delivered more than 120,000 signatures – including yours – to Walmart in five cities. The next day, warehouse worker Javier Rodriguez cornered Walmart executive Rajan Kamalanathan, who heads the company's ethical outsourcing initiative, at a private event in Washington, D.C. In Illinois workers at a Walmart distribution center joined us on strike to end retaliation.

Walmart is feeling the heat and it knows there are problems. Help warehouse workers by sending Walmart and its contractor, NFI, an email today!!! (http://takeaction.walmartwatch.org/...)

Please ACT NOW, this small effort on our part means so much to Warehouse Workers.
Their strike continues.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

For food and food supplements, the FDA has regulations about how they are supposed to be stored.  I work for a company that, indirectly, competes with Walmart and we have to follow 21CFR Part 111.

As you can imagine, the industry has a lot of input on these regulations and they can be vague.

But I can't imagine that the Obama administration doesn't peek inside a Walmart DC once in a while?  We had an FDA auditor in earlier in the year where I work.

Either Walmart has satisfied the letter of FDA regulations or no one has checked.  It would be interesting to see which it is.

      •  "broken equipment" (0+ / 0-)

The "broken equipment" would probably prevent a Walmart DC that handles food from being in compliance with FDA regulations.

And, if I recall correctly, Cal-Osha (administered by California's Democratic governor and state legislature) would also have regulations against broken equipment.

Did you sign the letter of support for the striking warehouse workers?

This is an action diary, after all, as stated in the title.

Neither the warehouse nor Walmart seem to care much about regulations, which is the whole point of signing the letters of support.

WalMart already has competitive advantage because of its size.  It shouldn't gain added advantage over competitors by shirking regulations that, assuming they're in place, should cover everyone in like fashion.

I think this point is an important adjunct to the conditions the workers face.

Not Scott Matheson Democrats like here.

Why, in a state with a Democratic governor and a Democratic legislature; could Walmart think that it is above the law?

How is Walmart above the law with the current administration and at least one house of congress?

You'd think that something outrageous had happened, like the a secretary of state had once served on Walmart's board; thus making Walmart immune to regulations.
