WESTERVILLE, Ohio -- In a line that event attendees found a bit puzzling, Mitt Romney warned a crowd of mostly middle-class onlookers on Wednesday not to expect too much tax relief under his administration.
"We have got to reform our tax system," Romney said at a morning event here. "Small businesses most typically pay taxes at the individual tax rate. And so our individual income taxes are the ones I want to reform. Make them simpler. I want to bring the rates down. By the way, don't be expecting a huge cut in taxes because I'm also going to lower deductions and exemptions. But by bringing rates down we will be able to let small businesses keep more of their money so they can hire more people."
The comments were either a flub on Romney's part or an admission that many of the deductions and exemptions that he will have to target in order to make his tax plan deficit neutral will end up affecting the middle class.
So, Mr. Romney. Maybe through lack of sleep or just plain indifference, you've decided to clue the American middle class in on what you have in store for them.
Fortunately, based on polling numbers, your pessimistic, callous, selfish, elitist view of our country is taking a toll on your ability to damage us by claiming the Presidency.
Did you really think most of us were stupid enough not to figure out what your plan is? Do you really think the average income earner doesn't know that, as a salaried employee, their deductions are scarce compared to someone like you - simply based on the fact that most of the good deductions are taken by company owners? Did you really think that most of the country would consider a tax cut for capital gains as a boon for millions who make the majority of their income through company salaries? I run a small business and know that unless you are making a considerable amount of money from it the tax benefits are minimal at best. You, on the other hand, believe the only people who should benefit in this economy are those like yourself - the petty, low-income earners (below $250,000 a year) be damned.
Here's hoping you become the pariah of your party - and your party becomes a permanent minority from this point on.
