It's bad enough that the U.S. Supreme Courtallowed our state's restrictive voter registration law to stand. It's even worse that Texas' Republican attorney general, Greg Abbott, has demonstrated once again that he is (contrary to what he claims) not for protecting vote integrity but protecting Republican political interests.
In his statement defending the law, Abbott claimed that the law was necessary to protect against what he calls "voter fraud," but if you really wanted to know what his-- and his GOP colleague's-- motives regarding this law, you don't have to look very far.
More below.
Here's what Abbott said as reported in the Austin American-Statesman:
“The Supreme Court’s rejection of Project Vote’s appeal is a victory for voter integrity and helps Texas prevent fraud in the voter-registration process. The partisan groups that challenged these laws were founded by and affiliated with ACORN - an organization that was notorious for voter-registration fraud. With this ruling, the court rejected these ACORN affiliates’ attempts to circumvent election integrity laws and helped ensure that Texans can have confidence in the integrity of their elections.”
What fraud, Mr. Abbott? Do you have specific instances of actual fraud? Or is all that you have a bunch of sad Republican excuses designed to cover up what the GOP's real motives are.
And what about this trash you and other Republicans keep barking about an organization that no longer exists whose goal was to empower minority interests to make their lives better and not what you and other Republicans have claimed (along with your propaganda mouthpiece that calls itself "Fox News.")
Mr. Abbott, your motives are very clear. Despite your best intentions, you and your GOP allies will not be successful at blocking the will of the people by standing in our way in voting booths the way George Wallace stood in the way of school desegregation in the South.
I'm sorry, Mr. Abbott. Like the slogan I used to hear years ago: "The people united will never be defeated."
