"We didn’t find any tomato committing lewd acts," said Kyle Shenk, board member of Green Urban Initiative (GUI), in response to the allegation that a community garden had been used for sexual activity. GUI's garden in Harrisburg, PA was bulldozed by order of City Council President Wanda Williams.
GUI leased several lots in the city last spring to build community gardens. They invested time, money, and sweat to create areas where city residents could grow their own food. A neighbor at one of those lots complained to Williams about the garden, claiming it was overrun with weeds and was being used to hide drugs and guns.
Williams ordered a city public works crew to bulldoze the garden on September 19th. No notice was given to the group that had the lease, the site was just plowed under. When confronted at a City Council meeting, Williams added the allegation of public sex acts occurring in the garden.
