I could have warned you that this wasn't going to go well. But I didn't expect it to happen this quick. Only a day after the NRSC opened the door to backing Todd Akin again (perhaps because recent events in Wisconsin have left them without other options), they already have reason to regret even considering such a move.
As we're probably all well aware, Todd Akin proved today that he cannot shut up when it comes to talking about women, saying Sen. Claire McCaskill "was more ladylike" during her previous Senate campaign. And it didn't take long at all for the NRSC and other national Republicans to once more run from Akin like he had the plague:
"Decline to comment," said a spokesman for the National Senatorial Committee.
Unspoken comment: "Cancel that check for Akin immediately."
And what of the RNC?
"I think it's best if the NRSC weighs in on these questions because we're so focused on the presidential," an RNC spokeman said.
Loose translation: "This is your fuckup, you deal with it. We're already dealing with Romney, don't we have enough disasters to deal with these days?"
And as for the local GOP:
The Missouri Republican Party promised to "do everything we can" for Akin on Tuesday. The party did not immediately respond to a request for comment following Akin's latest remarks.
Imagine that.
Will the GOP still back Akin if he keeps shooting his mouth off like this? They may have no choice, but he sure isn't making it easy for them.
6:29 PM PT: Akin also compared McCaskill to a "wildcat."
Someone buy this man a muzzle, please.
