This diary gives 10 reasons not to see "Won't Back Down".
http://www.dailykos.com/...

Here's an 11th.

It's funded and produced by Philip Anschutz' company Walden media

What is Walden Media you ask?

The company is owned by the Christian conservative Philip Anschutz, who has said he expects their movies "to be entertaining, but also to be life affirming and to carry a moral message."
What kind of moral message, you ask?

Hmm, could it be a Christian, Conservative, Right-to-life, Anti-Gay, Climate-change denier, kind of moral message?

Let's check Wikipedia to see how Philip Anschutz defines "morality."

Often identified as "Christian billionaire Phil Anschutz", he is a Republican donor who supported George W. Bush's administration. He has been an active patron of a number of religious and conservative causes.

Some Facts about Anchutz:

1. In May 2001, the Bush administration upheld Anschutz's right to drill an exploratory oil well at Weatherman Draw, in south-central Montana where Native American tribes wanted to preserve sacred rock drawings.
2. Helped fund Colorado's 1992 Amendment 2,which would overturn laws that prohibit discrimination  on the basis of sexual orientation
3. Financed and distributed films with Christian themes, such as Amazing Grace and The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, for mass audiences through his two film production companies and ownership of much of the Regal, Edwards and United Artists theater chains.
4. In 2009 Anschutz purchased the conservative American opinion magazine The Weekly Standard from Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation
5. Philip Anschutz and fellow board members of the American Petroleum Institute in Washington are credited by Bush's energy secretary for the Oval Office decision to kill the Kyoto Protocol in 2001
6. Funded Institute for American Values, which campaigns against same-sex marriage and against single parenting.
7. Anschutz also funded the pro-charter school movie Waiting for Superman

Ah, YES the kind of morality which protects the right to discriminate against gays, desecrate sacred sites of those who hold other views, promote conservative christian views and advocate for charter schools. That kind of morality!!

Note that  Walden media also produced
The seeker - The Dark is Rising Which was directed by David Cunningham of the notorious group Youth With a Mission...
(David Cunningham also directed that stunning piece of RW progaganda, "The path to 9/11")

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

    But that's just me.

Repubs started up the car, hit the throttle and sent it over the cliff, and now they're complaining that the black guy hasn't fixed it fast enough.

  •  And one other thing (4+ / 0-)

The funny thing about that movie  - I was at a candidate's meeting for the local school board last night. They were discussing how Charter Schools largely avoid dealing with students who have any disabilities whatsoever, and pass them back to the public schools who cannot refuse them and have services.

That happened to a friend of mine. Her kid was in a charter school  and is dyslexic  - she is bright but has learning diabilities. The owner of the charter school basically gave her no additional services to help. She even said, that if my friend didn't like it, maybe she should take her kid out of that school. Which she eventually did, and got services to help reading and writing from a special tutor at the public school and now her daughter is thriving.

    Exact opposite of the film.

public money if they are not going to conform to federal law regarding disabilities and access in education.

That's one more thing to add to my long list of small problems. --my son, age 10

        But who monitors this?

It's as simple as, well, the director at the school didn't say No outright....
She dragged her feet, and said "oh we're working on that"
When eventually she did provide someone to help with reading it was inconsistent, low quality, hard to schedule, etc.

There are ways of making a parent take their kid out without kicking the kid out.

  •  The Dark Is RIsing was a brilliant book (3+ / 0-)

by Susan Cooper with, if anything a pagan sensibility. I couldn't watch the movie, even if it did Ian McShane in it.  The author basically told fans she was horrified by what they'd done to the movie.  All the books in that series used Celtic/pagan myth and were not in the least Christian Right.

Another reason to hate this guy: he turned a Celtic pagan book into something its creator loathed.

    •  yeah I don't think Youth With a Mission (0+ / 0-)

is particularly pro-pagan..  I read alot about them during the path to 9/11 thing. They are cultish.

      •  The books had young people with missions (0+ / 0-)

but she used Celtic myths to back it up. In one of the books, the hero gets into trouble for stepping in when he stepped in to prevent several bullies from beating up  Pakistani boy--this was the 80s, Thatcher's Britain, and "Pakky bashing" was a game for skinheads.

It's possible to have a mission and be pro-pagan, but if the film is made by a member of the Christian RIght it can never be toelrant of any other faith.
