Just cuz. I was talking to someone about a question they once read in a music-magazine. It was something like if you could've written any song what would you have wanted to write? And whomever they asked (in the magazine) IIRC said "Girls, Girls Girls" (Pretty funny as I believe it was inspired by a Gentlemen's Club with that sign).
*I always thought maybe "Blowing in the Wind" because it is so simple but profound.
I was discussing with someone over the weekend. I thought of some others, then in listening to one I thought there were aspects of our Political Culture, especially that of the right that are perfectly epitomized in one when I thought about it. Even this election.
"Working Class Hero" By John Lennon. Just thought an interesting question. What's the side-music. I know they are trying to pump up the volume on all kinds of stuff I'd want to cover my ears, but I hear other things and think them prophetic. Maybe they always will be.
For some reason driving through one of Cleveland's most affluent suburbs, it clicked. Not that I hadn't gotten it before. This election as it's evolved has become more than just D or R. It is finally getting to the point where they are not even hiding who they are. They boast about things we see but are completely idiotic to any medium voter theorem, or I guess just plain rude, and are actually embracing it! But they don't care.
Even though I believe Obama will win, even if Obama is up 9, that much of the Country agrees that "we don't care about ourselves, we hate the people that ___", etc. etc. etc. More ether, venom. It's bursting out, and quite frankly has been troubling since 2008.
And if you don't remember the lyrics well I will share some below the fold. Of my Choice.
So in listening to this it seemed prophetic to me. I am not old enough to know if it has always been the haves' trying to convince the have nots' "yes listen to us, but . . . and sure maybe you'll be in my position."
Towards the end of the song. The clear message that those who ride on unbridled hate espouse, the lie:
There's room at the top they're telling you still
But first you must learn how to smile as you kill
If you want to be like the folks on the hill
Prior, desrcribes to a T our "soma". Or rather those that don't get that even most democrats are more like Corporation type people, than people type people. Maybe Rove got his idea of using the religious right from Lennon:
Keep you doped with religion and sex and TV
And you think you're so clever and classless and free
But you're still *ing peasants as far as I can see
A working class hero is something to be
I added this bold. Because in most other countries, I think it'd be clear. What does your average Georgia Farmer, Texas, wherever, have in common with Romney, or who the Republicans want to be, and want to tell us. Before yes TV was Soma, Religion, but now it's getting transparent. I voted for Romney so I'm not a social leech? Well See Third Line. And so am I. Most all of us.
They hate you if you're clever and they despise a fool
Till you're so ***ing crazy you can't follow their rules
Certainly the former of first line, they like to pretend the latter doesn't apply. Bush won because he could say anything in a bumper sticker. And that's all he could remember. It's gone from appealing to the lowest common denominator to putting them in office.
It's my choice so far. This election should tell the leadership of this Country something. Hopefully its a mandate not about a specific policy, but about where we have gotten to as a society. But it probably will not. And we probably will look at a new graph in 10 years showing where our wealth went.
P.S. Lennon nailed the educational system (with student loans that make you just a part of the machine with no choice but to take the job you wouldn't to repay, I've had so many conversations with people that absent student loans you'd have real choices, not people getting their first taste of making $40,000.00 and thinking they are now making "good money" while despising 40 hours of their waking moments a week.
When they've tortured and scared you for twenty-odd years
Then they expect you to pick a career
UPDATE: Love the answers. I added a poll. Whomever gets most votes, I will donate $50.00 to a Candidate of their choice (unless someone tricked me, lol). If working class hero, well I'll for second place's choice.
