This, from a Limbaugh call on Friday:
RUSH: Tom in Atlantic City, New Jersey, you're first on Open Line Friday. Hi.
CALLER: (chuckling) That's funny. (silence)
RUSH: Tom, are you there?
CALLER: Yes, I am here.
RUSH: It's your turn, sir. You are on Open Line Friday. Hello.
CALLER: Hi. You're one of my heroes, and just to address one thing: I make a lot of observations, and I just hope the American people aren't as stupid as they're made out to be, 'cause everything that comes out of these people are lies. But on the issue of Obama couldn'ta done anything about this economy, am I right in thinking that when we were attacked on 9/11, they decimated our financial system and really put us back to zero at the starting gate? And Bush, he brought us back. In his four years, he brought the economy back and got us going forward.
RUSH: Well --
CALLER: So Obama saying again that he couldn't do anything about this means he's an empty suit and his absent on the job.
RUSH: No. It's that his policies will never work because he's a socialist. His policies won't work. That's why he can work as hard as anybody ever has, and as long as he implements his policies, it isn't gonna work. But I saw something the other day that I think Reagan inherited an actual, in certain statistical ways, worse economy than Obama did. And Reagan fixed it. Reagan inherited a much worse economy than Obama inherited from Bush.
This is all... It's all just poppycock. But that's why I'm trying to make a big point of it here. You said: I hope the American people aren't stupid. We have been told that they are! That's what all of this adds up to: The American people are stupid. There is no other way the American people could think what they think if what the Republican pollsters are telling us is right. [emphasis added]
—Rush Limbaugh: If Obama Wins, He'll Inherit a Worse Economy Than the First Time Around
"There is no other way the American people could think what they think if what the Republican pollsters are telling us is right."
What do the "Republican pollsters" tell us? It is a little difficult to comprehend exactly what Rush is talking about here. Both Fox News and Rasmussen currently have President Obama ahead of Mitt Romney. But let us assume for a moment that Rush is referring to Unskewed Polls, which puts Romney ahead across the board. Unskewed Polls is a parasitic, re-interpretive website that publishes revised polls based upon a "cosmological constant", a concept which Einstein adopted then abandoned when he realized that adjusting his calculations to fit pre-conceived notions about the universe was unscientific.
Rush and the Republicans are ensconced on the horns of a similar dilemma: their pre-conceived notions won't allow them to accept the tentative, but widely accepted result of mathematical calculations showing polling leads for Obama.
Now I know that Rush sometimes says the opposite of what he really means to mock those he disagrees with. So I'm not placing too much weight on his actual words. But if we should accept his statements at face value, then this is my interpretation of what he's trying to say:
Rush concludes if Unskewed Polls' use of a "cosmological constant" to fix the numbers is correct, there can be no other conclusion to explain the social circumstance: "the American people are stupid". According to Rush, "there is no other way the American people could think what they think."
Indeed, after a little consideration, I'm certain that's exactly what Limbaugh meant. If Obama can refer to the "unbelievable American system" and have his "you didn't build that" comment considered only within its own context (by Rush and many of his ilk), then I'm certain the new standard for such considerations must apply to Rush as well!
Rush believes the American people are stupid.
Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment.
—Albert Einstein
