I really hate analogies, especially sports analogies, but I cannot contain myself.
The way I see it, President Obama is leading this election cycle by two touchdowns and we’ve clearly reached the two minute warning in the 4th quarter. Obama has had a strong running game averaging 5-8 yards per carry all season long. Attempting to connect on long passing routes with states that aren’t looking his way may just wind up as interceptions. Let Romney waste time and throw screen plays out those guys because they need attention.
You’ve got all the blue states lining the end zone, and more than enough swing states are making their way to the field.
Winners know when the game is in hand and Obama has been here before. All Obama has to do during the debates is simply run out the clock and take a knee. Play it safe and keep the ball out of Romney’s hands.
So, how does one “run out the clock” in a national debate? I hate to give her any credit, but Palin put on a clinic during the last election cycle. The precedence has been set that regardless of the question that the moderator asks, you are not obligated to answer it. In fact, you can feel at liberty to talk about whatever you want really.
I may draw some fire on this tactic, but let’s be honest. We do not want and cannot afford any slip ups. We need to let Romney who is behind and will be bringing an all-out blitz, take the missteps and sink further in the polls. Let Romney throw the hail marries that go incomplete or better, get intercepted.
When the clock expires, President Obama can spike it in the end zone.
Final Score
Barack Obama 313
Mitt Romney 221
