Last night we saw Mitt Romney grasping at straws, trying to defend his plan to cut taxes for the ultra-wealthy.
What did he come up with? Telling our nation that he’d cut government support of public broadcasting – and critical educational programming like Sesame Street – and that they should start running ads instead.
Not on our watch. Sign my petition and let’s tell Mitt Romney: Say no to ads on Sesame Street.
Unfortunately, this has been part of Romney’s “plan” from the start. Here’s what he said last December:
"We're not going to kill Big Bird. But Big Bird is going to have advertisements. Alright?"
Time for a fact check, Governor: PBS support represents 0.012% of the federal budget. You’re going to have to do a lot more than cut off Big Bird to deal with your plan to give another massive tax cut to millionaires and billionaires.
My kids watched Sesame Street growing up. Like many Americans – including Mitt Romney - I’m a huge Big Bird fan.
But America's children need quality, educational, advertising-free television. For 43 years, Sesame Street has led the way for our kids. Putting commercial advertising on Sesame Street won't make any difference in our national debt, and just hurts our kids.
Sign my petition today and tell Mitt Romney that you oppose his plan to put commercial advertising on Sesame Street.
For Big Bird,
Senator Jeff Merkley
