The Daily Bucket is a place where we post and exchange our observations about what is happening in the natural world in our neighborhood. Bugs, buds, birds - each note is a record that we can refer to in the future as we try to understand the patterns that are quietly unwinding around us.

Our Sighting
10/5/2012 - Castro Valley, CA.
We had a
Pacific Ring-Necked Snake in the front yard in the evening. I had never seen nor even heard of these guys, though it turns out that there are many varieties of ring-necked snakes, they are widespread and not too uncommon. They are also generally nocturnal and their preferred habitat is cover. They do a really cool thing with their tail when disturbed, coiling it into a cone shape which displays their orange underside and creates orange and dark stipes.
