1. Today Sesame Street requested the Obama campaign take down the current Big Bird ad. And they were right to do so. They are a non partisan, non political entity, and for very good reasons, they want to keep it that way. I was pretty astounded to hear that the Obama campaign used Big Bird without permission.
2. The pundits, even on our side, are growing weary of the Big Bird meme. It's not even in the game of what's important, like say, saving General Motors is. At this point it's time stolen from a better message.
3. I work out of my home, and see more Obama speeches than most. So it's fair to say that I'm not the norm. However, I'm sick of the Big Bird lines. They were funny a week ago, now they just sound a bit desperate and forced.
It's not a big freaking deal, but at this point, the optics of Obama reasserting his stride are huge, and I don't think wasting ONE MORE MINUTE on Big Bird is useful.
Mr. President, please shake loose of those yellow feathers and let Big Bird go. You have SO MUCH more to crow about.
UPDATE: Just saw Rachel Maddow do a better job of making Big Bird relevant than the president has been doing. She pointed out that the amount of federal money given to PBS is equal to 6 hours of Pentagon spending. She also pointed out that firing Big Bird was the ONLY detail he gave of how he was going to make his tax cuts work. Both of these are excellent points, and if Big Bird must be with us longer, this is the way to do it. Not with stale stump lines that the press repeats over and over again.
