I love Big Bird, I love PBS. Not the way Romney does, but sincerely. I learned much more from PBS programs than I ever did in high school.
But, as much fun as the Big Bird meme has been, it's time for the President to drop it, and start emulating the man who made 20th c. American prosperity possible, Franklin Delano Roosevelt.
Listen to President Roosevelt. Every word he says could come from President Obama's mouth today, and no one, no one, could fault him for it.
If President Obama dared say this at the next debate, he wouldn't be an angry black man, he wouldn't be an Islamic radical, he wouldn't be a socialist.
He'd be an American, defending the rights of his fellow Americans.
If President Obama said this in his stump speech from this day till November 6th, he'd be a HERO to Democratic voters everywhere.
I understand what happened in the last debate -- it was the etch-a-sketch shake the Romney campaign promised us lo these many months ago. And somehow the Obama campaign hadn't prepared for it.
I personally think our President and his campaign can recover, with our help.
But we can't do it alone. President Obama has to drop Big Bird and start channeling the quintessential Democratic president.
Update
I wasn't expecting rec list, even at the bottom, even for a few minutes. Just hoping for discussion. Glad to see comments, and I'm trying to respond to all. Thank you all for reading and engaging.
Update again
Returned to obscurity, thank goodness. I hope readers will think about FDR and everything his policies have meant to us Americans, us 47%, 99%, whatever percent we think we are. We can't turn our backs on that legacy, that's all I wanted to say. (Changed title, MoT, not to get your rec, but because I think you're right.)
