Non-elected political leaders should not be able to hold an entire Party Hostage, preventing them from pursuing rational budgeting behavior.

Especially when their unelected, Extra-Constitutional Pledges explicitly contradict, what the American Constitution empowers our elected leaders to do ...

Yes, let's get back to that Constitution, shall we?
by jamess -- Jan 23, 2012

The Constitution instructs us to raise taxes to provide for the general welfare, and to provide for numerous public services, that strengthens the entire country -- not just the wealthy few.

And the non-elected Grover Norquist instructs us NOT to ...

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

and I did not know who he was until I came here to dkos.  Most people outside of sites like this who are not political junkies have no idea who Grover Norquist is or how dangerous he has been toward the democratic process.  I am surprised that more of the mainstream media has not put him in the spotlight.  At least recently, we have seen some of that on ALEC.

IMO, any elected official who signs a pledge of loyalty with an unelected person does not deserve to be representing the people.

This is a whole new field. When I was a child my Nebraska grandparents were sure all certain Catholics were ruled in the same way by the pope. Now you don't even need credentials.

We need a brilliant, strategic lawyer. Or filmmaker. It should be the Department of Justice, but it will have to be a fighter as forceful and articulate as Warren.

Increase understanding of Norquist's role in the Republican Party, and tie Romney to his policies.

Has Romney signed the pledge? I can't remember.

Most in the GOP signed a pledge to Grover Norquist that they won't raise taxes, ever. It doesn't matter to them what we want.

Mitt Romney and Tony Strickland have pledged to Grover to oppose all efforts to increase the marginal tax rate for individuals and business. Contrary to Romney's statements in his debate, he has promised Grover not to eliminate or reduce deductions and credits.

          ...

Even Ronald Reagan thought this tax scheme was crazy

          http://www.vcstar.com/...

We’ve seen what Romney does when he fears the right: He folds. That’s how his tax cut, which was initially modest, grew so large. That’s how he yoked himself to the insanely large cuts required by the Cut, Cap and Balance pledge. That’s how he signed Grover Norquist’s anti-tax pledge after opposing it in Massachusetts. That’s how he came to call the individual mandate, a policy he’d passed in his state and publicly championed for the nation, unconstitutional.

that Romney promised not to eliminate or reduce deductions and credits. But isn't that the only way he gets to "revenue neutrality" with his rate cuts?

So he is either lying to Grover, or (more likely) lying to the rest of us.

  •  what to do with King Grover: (3+ / 0-)
    Recommended by:

Someone (the Yes Men? Anonymous?) needs to create a royal entourage for King Grover, to dress up in medieval garb and follow him around everywhere and talk to him in the old medieval language that royal entourages used to use when talking to kings.

"Your Royal Highness, we beseech thee for an audience...."

    Etc.

And of course carry his crown on a violet pillow with gold tassels, as if to offer it to him to place upon his royal head.

Do this when the media are around and it will make national TV because it's such darn good television!

And just once on national TV with that, will permanently deflate King Grover as thoroughly as if someone were to stick him with a pin and cause him to pop.   Guaranteed.

"Minus two votes for the Republican" equals "plus one vote for the Democrat." Arithmetic doesn't care about their feelings either!

grover waves the pledge around but i don't think he'd be able to enforce it without limbaugh etc looming over his shoulder.

limbaugh spent months before the debt deadline ensuring teabagggers it would be no big deal to default and it would also force obama to make cuts. team limbaugh was also instrumental selling the "we can't keep borrowing" meme.

and now limbaugh's been blaming obama for the credit downgrade!

these shits need limbaugh around their necks

  •  jamess - I don't think any constitutional (0+ / 0-)

scholars would agree with this statement:

"The Constitution instructs us to raise taxes to provide for the general welfare, and to provide for numerous public services, that strengthens the entire country -- not just the wealthy few."

I certainly don't read that statement in the Constitution. You could say that "The Constitution allows ...............". It is certainly not the case that the Constitution instructs the federal government to raise taxes, in fact the taxing power of the federal government based on the original Constitution is very limited and the "general welfare" clause has been debated by scholars ever since it was written. At the beginning of our republic the services provided by the federal government were also very limited.

    "let's talk about that"
