The tragedy in Benghazi, Libya has the internet in a tizzy.
A few thoughts below the orange squiggle.....
A State Department official denied the request for additional security.
And while the buck stops with the President, this is irrelevant for three reasons:
1.) Testimony by the person who made the request:
"Let me say a word about the evening of September 11th (2012). The ferocity and intensity of the attack was nothing that we had seen in Libya, or that I had seen in my time in the Diplomatic Security Service. Having an extra foot of wall, or an extra-half dozen guards or agents would not have enabled us to respond to that kind of assault......It is critical that we balance the risk-mitigation with the needs of our diplomats to do their job, in dangerous and uncertain places. The answer cannot be to operate from a bunker."
The same person who requested the additional forces is also of the mind that a few more soldiers or resources would not have prevented the tragic loss of life.
2.) Why was the request denied,
"There was no specific tactical warning intelligence preceding the September assault on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, an attack that took the lives of the U.S. ambassador to Libya and three other Americans," according to Director of National Intelligence James R. Clapper Jr.
3.) The State Department security officials who testified before House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa's panel Wednesday never said they had made their requests to the president, Rhodes pointed out. That would be natural because the State Department is responsible for diplomatic security, not the White House, he said. Rhodes also pointed out that the officials were requesting more security in Tripoli, not Benghazi.
If we follow the logic (sorry) of the people who are making political-hay from Benghazi, then logic dictates that President Bush was responsible for the original 9/11 tragedy for ignoring the report of an Intelligence Analyst.”
