Democratic Congressman Chris Murphy demonstrated statesmanship in Thursday’s debate for the U.S. Senate when confronted with repeated personal attacks from Republican Linda McMahon.
For example, when asked by a panelist about negative advertising in the campaign, McMahon, instead of answering the question, responded with a negative attack.
“Talking about the issues would be a senseless exercise for Linda McMahon,” said Murphy. She “is addicted to personal attacks” which “didn’t work in 2010 and won’t work this year.”
When McMahon emphasized her experience as a former CEO of World Wrestling Entertainment, Murphy replied, she is “an example of a CEO who is not qualified to be a U.S. Senator.”
McMahon suggested that she if elected she would be independent. But Murphy stressed that she supported much of the proposed Republican legislation, including the Blunt Amendment, which would have allowed not only religious groups but any employer with moral objections to opt out of the contraception coverage requirement of the 2010 health care law.
“On issue after issue she stands with the Republican Party,” Murphy said.
Summarizing the choice, Murphy added that Connecticut voters would decide “if the Tea Party should be in power in the Senate.”
