When President Obama debated Mitt Romney, he signified his astonishment at Romney denying he'd ever held any of the right-wing positions he had been spouting on the campaign trail for the previous 18 months by looking down at the lectern, and making notes.

One and all, the critics leapt on the President's performance as passionless, aloof, checked-out, and pretty much the worst thing Anybody Ever Did, Ever.

My theory:  the President thought he was winning the debate because everyone would instantly see how much Mitt was lying.  But he forgot that most people are watching Honey Boo Boo, not MSNBC.  They aren't paying attention.  So they didn't know Mitt had completely reinvented his entire platform on the spot.

Follow me below the Orange Autograph Of Zsa Zsa Gabor for more.

Next, we sent Joe Biden into battle against Paul Ryan, whose lies were compact and swivelly-headed and rather thirsty overall.  But according to the Elders of the Village, all of whom are losing their hair at exactly the same rate (yes, Chuck Todd, watch out, Luke Russert)  the BIG story out of the Veep debate was the way Joe Biden reacted whenever Ryan spouted one of the Romney-Ryan's boilerplate untruths:  He laughed.

His laugh was widely critiqued.  His smile was also found to be lacking.  Although Joe had the exact same look on his face that my father used to get when I tried to slide some whopper past my mother, the Village did not care for his laughter.

So I propose for the President a simple tool for Tuesday's debate.  No smiles, no looking down at his lectern.  Just hold up the sign.

As a bonus, here is a baby pic of Paul Ryan.

And here is the President's Tool for Debate #3:

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

Obama thought Romney's lies were so obvious that he did not think he had to counter them

He over estimated the American people's having been tuned in enough to know this.

He underestimated how much the debate was a 'first look" at Romney

I also believe that Obama knows what his mistaken assumption in the moment was. And kicks himself for not realizing the dynamic.

Especially the lesson we learned historically...Republican lies must be countered ASAP ...too many people might believe them

Obama knows he screwed up because he thought this rule could not possibly apply in a debate in real time. ANd maybe even he that they failed to understand the complete depth of Mitt's depraved mendacity that he'd lie with conviction.

    He knows his mistake

it's too bad this next one is the town hall becuase it may be a harder format to bring up the correction he NEEDS to do on the debate stage

it makes him have to do something that is not his strength...think verbally and quickly on his feet. He's a better advanced planner and writer...he thinks when he writes...this is why his speeches are amazing when he's on. He wrote that stuff, he believes it...it isn't false. But it lets him bring his ideas together. If a voter asks a question he MUST respond directly...people hate when policians don't answer the question
then...how to bring in the corrections he needs to make?

I  totally disagree with you that President Obama can't think verbally and quickly on his feet!  How soon, how soon we forget!!!  I have been reading diaries here since the first debate and I think it's sad how Dems were dragging their faces on the ground until the second debate.  I did not think the President "lost" the debate.  In fact, I was thrilled afterwards!  Have you really lost faith in President Obama?  Do you not remember what happened on January 29, 2010?  Here is a quote from the article to refresh your memory:

"So effective was the president that Fox News cut away from the broadcast 20 minutes before it ended."

of basically opening every one of his answers by correcting Mitt's lies in 30 seconds or so, then move on to his own answer and end on a positive note each time.

He might even think about announcing up front that he plans to do this - "since Governor Romney is so intent on denying his own long-held positions, I'll try to note his misstatements each time I answer tonight, but sometimes they come so thick and fast it's hard to keep up."

But I am hoping he has a better idea.

Obama throws him in a headlock, holds him down, and cuts off some of his hair?

Dude would be bald by thirty minutes into the debate.
