We are unsettled
One who was of us is no longer of us
We cannot find his scent on the tree trunk
Our people are unhappy and water leaks from their eyes
They wake in the night making sounds of distress
We look for the one who was of us but he is no longer of us
The pack is diminished
We are unsettled.
Last night our beloved Cavalier, Sancho, left us totally unexpectedly for
the Bridge. We were visiting my sister on Friday and I was going to take my
dad somewhere. Sancho, typically, jumped up and wanted to come along.
Again, typically, I told him to come along. As we headed for the car,
Sancho seemed to trip over the edging to the garden and fell over. But then
couldn't get back up. My niece, who is a vet, was there and she came
running. She didn't have any of her stuff with her, but she checked Sancho
out and it seemed that he wasn't in any immediate danger. Sancho was
subdued Friday evening, and seemed a little 'out of it' Friday night.
Saturday morning he was his old self. He got up and trotted out to do his
morning business, wandered around looking for pets and scratches. We found
a vet who could see him, so we drove the 60 miles to the vet who checked him
out and couldn't find anything wrong other than a heart murmur that he has
had for years. The consensus was that the episode was probably brought on
by over stimulation (we were at my sister's for my father's 90th birthday
party and there were something like 30 people there). As Saturday evening
progressed and the party got louder, my niece the vet, thought that Sancho
was starting to look a little overwhelmed, so we took him out to the RV and
put him in the bed so he could rest in peace and quiet. I came back to
check on him about an hour later and he was gone.
I am devastated. He was my special guy and if you wanted to know where
Sancho was, all you had to do was figure out where I was. He was that very
special dog that just climbed into your heart and stayed there. I haven't
been able to stop bawling. There is such an empty place now. Our other two
dogs are subdued and staying close and trying to offer what solace they can,
while at the same time needing lots of pets and scratches.
