I am writing this diary mad as hell. My daughter, after seeing some of the racist things posted about Obama on the Internet and after researching it, posted on her Facebook that anyone who is voting for Mitt Romney is racist. Well, the reaction was beyond anything I would have ever imagined.
She has 400 friends, but most aren't friends, but people who like to add friends to make it appear that they have a lot of them. My daughter has always been very timid, and not very popular, but she is trying to build her confidence. One of the white guys from her school she hasn't been to in two years posts an inflammatory comment in response. I told her that not everyone who is voting for Romney is racist, so she deleted it. What happened next was when it got really disturbing.
This boy notified some of his friends, and they started posting on her page. These are people who have never posted on her Facebook page, and every comment was derogatory and personal. The ones who weren't her friends started sending her requests to friend them so they could join in on the harrassment. She stayed up all night in tears.
Today, she has received numerous phone calls from an unknown number. I called the number back, notifying whoever was calling that I was her mother and I wanted to know who kept calling. They hung up, but it was clearly a young person.
I am trying to get her engaged in the political process, and, being new to the political scene, she is shocked by the amount of racism Obama has endured. Sure, she made a generalization, but this type of political bullying has got to stop. We live in a nation that is suffering from epidemic of a rude, obnoxious mob mentality that has apparently been passed on to the next generation of young voters.
I will say that we do live in Louisiana, so the racism is more expected here than in other places. My daughter, however, is terrified of starting her new job for fear that they will stalk her. I just wanted to post this to let everyone know that we need to fight harder to keep this type of mentality from passing from one generation to the next.
