I figured I could stomach maybe a minute or two of opposition research, and so, around 10:40 last night, I put on fox news. I was expecting a whine-fest, where they complained about the moderator, and yet somehow asserted that Romney wiped the floors with the president. I was expecting to hear that very phrase: “wiped the floors with him”.
I was pleasantly surprised. Brit Hume and two other guys were indeed whining, but they were whining about Romney’s big missed opportunity. I also thought while watching the debate, that Romney could have easily dodged the “Rose Garden” moment, by not insisting that Obama was misquoting himself.
Instead of hammering away at exact wording, hoping for a “gotcha” moment, Romney should have instead ceded the quote of an “act of terror” to Obama, but then he should have attacked on why Susan Rice and others in the Administration were insisting the whole mess was about a video, several days later.
Instead, Romney stalked toward the President and laid down his big “gotcha” moment, based on nothing but exact wording of a quote, rather than policy and communications concerns and possible security lapses on Obama’s watch. This was the only time I felt Obama was vulnerable, but mendacious Mitt didn’t capitalize.
Brit Hume claimed that Romney rehearsed his Libya debate tactics for many hours and was waiting to pounce on the Libya moment.
He blew it…badly!
