I have not seen any story condemning Governor Romney for his slander against Ambassador Susan Rice. In the debate he said, "I think you have to ask yourself why didn’t we know five days later when the ambassador to the United Nations went on TV to say that this was a demonstration. How could of we not known"
In fact she did not mislead the American people. She did not blame demonstrators for the attack. Here is what she said.
RICE: [O]ur current best assessment, based on the information that we have at present, is that, in fact, what this began as, it was a spontaneous — not a premeditated — response to what had transpired in Cairo. In Cairo, as you know, a few hours earlier, there was a violent protest that was undertaken in reaction to this very offensive video that was disseminated.
We believe that folks in Benghazi, a small number of people came to the embassy to — or to the consulate, rather, to replicate the sort of challenge that was posed in Cairo. And then as that unfolded, it seems to have been hijacked, let us say, by some individual clusters of extremists who came with heavier weapons, weapons that as you know in — in the wake of the revolution in Libya are — are quite common and accessible. And it then evolved from there.
We’ll wait to see exactly what the investigation finally confirms, but that’s the best information we have at present.
Now, you should be able to see with your own eyes that she said
1) "current best assessment, based on the information that we have at present," True statement. No one has shown otherwise.
2) "We believe that folks in Benghazi, a small number of people came to the embassy to — or to the consulate, rather, to replicate the sort of challenge that was posed in Cairo." With hindsight this turned out to be wrong. There was no separate demonstration. She never did say, however, that the demonstrators stormed the embassy as they did in Cairo.
3) "some individual clusters of extremists who came with heavier weapons, weapons that as you know in — in the wake of the revolution in Libya are — are quite common and accessible. And it then evolved from there." Oh my, she described what happened!!! How can that be?
4) "We’ll wait to see exactly what the investigation finally confirms, but that’s the best information we have at present."
Ambassador Rice told the America people the truth. She got some details wrong, but she cautioned her listeners at the time. Now, Governor Romney has twisted her words in a cheap political attack.
Stand up for Ambassador Susan Rice.
