I believe life begins at conception. The only exception I have for to have an abortion is in the case of the life of the mother. I struggled with myself for a long time but I came to realize life is that gift from God, even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape. It is something that God intended to happen.
Here's what I don't get. If you're a Christian believer, isn't everything part of God's plan? Not just rape and rape pregnancies, but the Giants winning the NLCS, my daughter's old Ford going to its grave the day she started cancer treatment, the brick falling off the top of our neighbor's chimney and missing the mailman?
Growing up Catholic, I was raised to believe the Virgin Mary might influence her Son, but He was God and nothing happened without His advance knowledge and permission. I truly believed I got into Stanford because of the novena I prayed to the Blessed Mother. Obviously I don't think this way any longer, because when a hummingbird flew down and perched an inch from my hand while I was watering the vegetable garden a few hours after our dog died, I privately disagreed with my right-wing Christian neighbor that it was a sign from God. I didn't think God had anything to do with it, though I sort of hoped our dog's spirit was telling me she was in a happy place now so please stop crying.
If Mourdock's god intended for a woman to get pregnant with her rapist's sperm, then his god knew this was in her future before she was even born. His god also knew about the development of sensitive pregnancy tests, morning-after pills, and flexible plastic tubing. If his god didn't intend for these to exist, they wouldn't. If his god didn't intend for us to use them, we wouldn't. If his god didn't intend for Karen Ann Quinlan to suffer irreversible brain damage from an indiscretion at a party, she wouldn't have, nor would the technology have existed to keep her alive long enough to reach an Emergency Room.
Why is his god's intended technology good when it keeps a young woman from going to heaven when she's called, but bad when it both keeps a young woman from killing herself and returns an embryo's soul to the realm of angels?
What am I missing here?
