Mitt Romney is appearing in a TV ad for Indiana Treasurer Richard Mourdock (R), marking the first time the Republican presidential nominee has made a direct appeal for a U.S. Senate candidate over the airwaves this election cycle. That would be this ad, the one where Romney proudly declares his support for Mourdock. The ad the Romney campaign is refusing to pull from the airwaves.
And it's not just that Mourdock is the one and only Senate candidate for whom Romney has cut a TV ad. His running mate gave Mourdock a hearty endorsement back in September, and Paul Ryan's PAC gave Mourdock a nice bundle of cash earlier this year. In other words: Romney and Ryan love love love Mourdock.
Sure, Romney's willing to drop his support for a Republican who embarrasses the party. You know, if it's convenient for Romney:
That would be Rep. Scott DesJarlais, the Republican doctor-turned-congressman who, before becoming a congressman, knocked up his mistress/patient and tried to coerce her into having an abortion. And when that story broke, Romney bailed double quick.
But this is different. Romney and Ryan can't very well distance themselves from the guy who is obviously their very favorite candidate for the Senate. No matter how much the campaign might "disagree" with what Mourdock said, Romney's standing by his man.
