I must confess, I don't actually know the first thing about football, American or otherwise. I actually spent several minutes reading about it on Wikipedia trying to construct that metaphor. I don't even know if it makes sense. I do know that a lot of people like sports metaphors, so hopefully they will appreciate the effort.
The point is, Mitt Romney made a strategic error Monday night. He knew the that Obama's second debate performance had stopped his momentum. He knew that the game was tied. He knew that Obama had learned his lesson after the first debate and would be on the offensive. And, most significantly, he knew that he didn't know enough about foreign policy to actively engage a sitting president, or, really, even Sarah Palin.
Knowing all of these things, he made the decisions to try to appear amicable and then play victim when the President went after him. The problem is, his strategy failed and now they are in overtime and the president is about to score the game winning touchdown.

The polling is already shaping up to be a very good day for the President. The RAND tracking poll has Obama gaining two points overnight, putting him up 49-45. Gallup also showed a two point movement in both its RV and LV screens. The President now leads Gallup in the RV screen 48-47 and is within striking distance in the LV screen, which currently favors Romney 50-47.
A few days ago, Romney was up by 7 in Gallup's poll, now he is up by 3.
Obama now has momentum on his side. He's had stellar debate performances. Best of all, there are not a bunch of wackos on our side spewing ridiculous things that the President needs to refute.
Obama will be winning the news cycles from this day forward.
On November 6, Obama will win re-election.
