Thanks to Right Wing Watch, I got to read a ridiculous opinion piece from the 'Christian Post' about how the bible is the best voters guide. While it strikes some birther notes and subtle bashes on the President, I can only imagine the level of cognitive dissonance required to cast a vote for Romney based on it.
Birther, eh? Yeah, I think so. The writer says a civil leader must be...
Known (Exodus 18:21; Deuteronomy 1:15; Deuteronomy 17:15)
Civil leaders should be selected from among their own people. People must know the candidate. This is why the Constitution of the United States requires the president must be naturally born in the U.S.
I see no reason to dismiss that remark as mere coincidence. The concept of a "natural-born citizen" has been key to the
debunked conspiracy theories of birthers since Obama took office, since they needed
some excuse behind which to hide their prejudices.
Not that they're fooling anyone but themselves, really.
Right Wing Watch picked on the article, and rightly so, for specifying that the bible says to vote for men, not women.
A male (Exodus 18:21; Deuteronomy 1:13)
The Scriptures require that we "choose wise, understanding, and knowledgeable men." The word men used here is not the generic term for "mankind" but rather the word for "male." Everywhere the qualifications for civil leaders are mentioned in the Bible, males – not females – are identified.
I wonder if this means that candidates like Michele Bachmann should be rejected by the bible-thumping electorate? Perhaps candidates like her serve merely as a bridge, a temporary solution until they can all be replaced by
men.
Keep going, though, and I can see...potential problems with putting this particular voter guide to use by the christian right.
Truthful (Exodus 18:21; Deuteronomy 16:19)
We are to elect men who keep their word. Most civil leaders in the United States take an oath of office with their hand placed on the Bible when they assume office. Our government is based upon promises from our leaders to keep the law and be truthful. Jesus Christ says, "Let your 'Yes' be 'Yes,' and your 'No,' 'No.' For whatever is more than these is from the evil one" (Matt. 5:37).
This may pose a slight problem for Mitt RMoney, considering that even Politifact (ha!) has
two pages' worth of whoppers devoted to the mittster. Willard's lied so much that columnists and pundits now spend their time picking and choosing the biggest and most easily debunked lies, the most egregious flip-flops and denials, just because he does it
so much.
That's not all, though. The proposed bible voters guide saves the best zinger for last.
Free from the love of money (Deuteronomy 17:17)
He should not have a driving hunger for riches. Leaders cannot be men led by greed and lust for riches.
At this point the choice for Romney must of course vanish in a puff of logic. So anyway, I look forward to the Obama votes rolling in from such bible-guided fundamentalists...
Just kidding. And I'm sure they are, too.
