If women are going to keep moving forward in this country, Massachusetts needs to elect Elizabeth Warren. She "gets it." Despite the fact that he is running a campaign calling himself an "independent thinker," Scott Brown is a Republican, supported by GOP $ and committed to the Republican Party platform. Yesterday many MA residents got a mailer by an organization that exposed his true alliances.
(Update: Did you get this postcard or any other mailer from this group? Please let me know in comments or send me a message.)
In what was yet another example of why white men in government should not have any control over the decisions women make about their own bodies, Indiana Republican Senate candidate Richard Mourdock revealed his positions about women, rape, and abortion during a debate on Tuesday:
"I struggled with it myself for a long time, and I realized that life is a gift from God, and I think even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape, that it is something God intended to happen," Mourdock said, explaining that he would allow for exceptions to an abortion ban when a mother's life is in danger.
As I traveled in and out of Boston yesterday, I listened to NPR and other news outlets report on which Republican candidates were "distancing" themselves from Mourdock. Scott Brown was among those declaring
himself a "pro-choice" Republican.
Brown told reporters during a campaign stop on Wednesday that he is a ‘‘pro-choice Republican’’ and does not share Mourdock’s views. Asked later if he still supported Mourdock’s candidacy, Brown answered that was up to the people of Indiana.
When I arrived home, I found a glossy postcard mailer:
These postcards declare Scott Brown as a Right-to-Life Republican. In order to be endorsed by the group paying for this mailing, The National Right to Life Committee, the group has to assess a candidate's positions, commitments and votes.
Take a look at the post card. Brown's positions and votes earned him the support of the "The National Right to Life Committee." There is money involved here. They have influence and power. This is a lobbying group focused on taking away our rights to make our own decisions.
This is the kind of influence voters can't buy. All we have is our vote.
Yesterday's mail demonstrated yet again that Scott Brown is NOT an Independent. He is a Republican. The GOP platform includes the statement that life begins at conception. Mourdock is probably surprised and confused. He was simply parroting the party line on abortion. He didn't get the memo to keep the plans to pat women on the head and tell them the GOP will handle their health care and the decisions they make about their own bodies, quiet -- until after the election.
We need Elizabeth Warren in the Senate to protect women's rights, women's income, women's families, women's education .... to protect our future.
Even if you aren't from MA you can help Elizabeth Warrenbecome a US Senator.
This matters to all women, not just those of us in Massachusetts, it will matter to all of the women, all ages, all colors, all religions, in the US.
