Just think. The election in 2008 of the first American President with an African father was a gift from God. The defeat of Romney, who built a campaign on greed, lies and deceit, will be a gift from God we could look forward to. And so on.
I guess I could go with that if I could ignore cancer, wars fought for no good reason but arrogance and oil (financed by borrowed money), war mongers who, having bankrupted the country, demand that we strip programs to help the dispossed (including broken warriors) because we can't afford it. And, in thinking about God's gifts, I need to forget the government policies that reallocated so much of our wealth to the very few, all with no need, by taking from those most in need.
Would it be irreverant to suggest that maybe God has Romnesia? Or, perhaps, God isn't involved in rape or wars. Perhaps we do all those things quite well on our own.
