My wife and her little sister, who is 17, have been highly distressed about their mother these days. No, not because of Mom's bad knees. It's because Mom is still one of those dreaded undecided voters who has been given serious thought to voting for Romney. She loved W. She had voted for McCain.

My wife, to date, has only employed the "bull-by-the-horns" strategy to try to bring Mom back from the Dark Side. Lots of raised voices, lots of "Mom, how could you?" She reminded her of the cratered Bush economy -- during which Mom lost an executive position and is now prematurely and unwillingly, essentially retired. She reminded her of how crappy things were for women when her mother was younger. And yet, no success. Mom was sticking to her GOP leanings.

Follow me over the orange cruller for the denouement.

Enter little sister, who is mature beyond her years and politically tuned-in. She gathered up video on the modern GOP and laid it out for Mom. She sat her down and together they watched Todd Akin describe how mysterious ladyparts "shut down" pregnancy from rape, and how Richard Mourdock thinks pregnancy from rape is "what God intended."

And then, little sister steeled her gaze and put her mother on the spot:

"Mom, if I were raped, would you make me have that baby?"

That was all the convincing Mom needed. She relented, and we have now gained one new Obama voter!

(And if anyone is a fan of Mudcat Saunders "electoral math," that's actually two votes -- one gained for our side, and one lost for theirs!)

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

One voter at a time over to our side.  Find their currency.  Speak their language.  Your SIL found what mattered to her mom & made it personal.

  •  Authority which stands silent in the face of (5+ / 0-)

abuse, becomes complicit. Authority which sides with the abuser is a perpetrator. Legislators who support the intent of the rapist, to implant his seed by force, are vicarious rapists themselves.
Rape is abuse. However, the thing about abuse is that the abused person is inclined to think that if s/he is just a bit more obedient, the abuser will cease. Abuse is essentially preemptive punishment for a "crime" that hasn't been committed yet. So, in the interest of demonstrating virtue as well making an effort to assert autonomy, the victim bends over backwards to become compliant and bring a halt to the abuse--i.e.  take control of her life. That it is not going to work because abusers are never satisfied doesn't occur to the good person who's got no interest in injuring someone else.
Which is why it is necessary for a third party to intervene and call a halt. There is no self-defense to injurious, but not lethal behavior.
I think we don't fully understand sadists. We think sadistic behavior is kinky. It's not. Sadists inflict harm because it makes them feel important, powerful. Sadism responds to the lust for power. We are mistaken when we think lust is restricted to sexual attraction. The lust to destroy seems much more potent. I think that's want we see in Willard's smirk. It really is more of a leer.

We organize governments to provide benefits and prevent abuse.

I thought women's rights would sway my union- and Obama-hatin' republican girlfriend.

But in the end, it was cuts to education that compelled her to vote for the blue team.  Her little grand baby is developmentally behind and will need the support only the Obama administration is willing to lend.

My mom and Dad left the Fox news low information family just after Kate and William's wedding.

I always told them that Fox news was an entertainment channel but they never believed me. I think something as simple as watching the Royal Wedding on BBC and then tuning into Fox and hearing so many stark differences (lies) really shocked them.

That continued for a few months where they were watching coverage on BBC then tuning into Fox and felt like there were two different events they were watching....that and the hatred and crazy talk I believe finally reached a limit, that they couldn't handle.

Now finally Obama has two new voters.

This is our moment...this is our time! President Barack Obama

This comes up just as I have been trying to help a friend convince her husband.  He voted for Obama last time but is disappointed with him.  He owns a small (as in two-person) business and has not seen much in the way of recovery.  He said he just can't stand four more years of this.  Nothing we can think of will budge him.

The blowhard at the senior center is an acquaintance and customer of his.  He has very little respect for this guy, despite the fact that he's a customer.  When she dropped me off after the center today, I had a great thought and called her back almost before she got home.  I told her that the next time he starts spouting RW crap that he's heard from customers or radio, she should tell him he sound like Mr. Blowhard.  She thinks that might just be what tips him back to Obama.  :-)

One at a time, we CAN do this!
