This is a short diary to allow for all to offer ideas on what to do to get ready for Hurricane Sandy.
You all know the standard items: batteries, gasoline, cash, non-perishable food, water etc.
You can read about more detail at the GOV website listed here
Spend a few minutes going through that for more basics.
I'm offering some thoughts below the fold....
Much of this below assumes power losses, and/or flooding.....
Beyond the obvious, there are some things that need expanded thought....
Cash---yes, have cash on hand as ATM's won't work if there is no power. How much, however? Consider having a few hundred dollars....you likely can't get supplies of any sort on a credit card, as those machines won't be working.
Banking....if you do online banking, do immediate bills now...access to Billpay may be gone.
Emergency Phone numbers----if you are like me, many of my needed phone numbers are on my computer, not necessarily on the iphone...print that list.
Also find the current local emergency preparedness number and have it handy.
Charging batteries----don't forget the iPads, and your camera rechargeable batteries, and even electric razors...(cell phones being obvious)
Refrigerator---turn it to a colder temp now...and if you lose power, keep it shut as much as possible. If you got a $10 steak in there---have it now. Minimize
those 3 half gallons of ice cream this weekend....they'll melt quickly.
Flooding----check your cellar for what is on the floor. Store as much as possible up high--especailly anything valuable.
Propane ---if you have a gas grill, consider filling the propane tank, no matter the level it's at....the grill may be your only source of cooking.
Laundry---Consider doing all you laundry now. If you are out of power for a week or so---you might want fresh clothes.
All of these things need to be done TODAY!! Waiting until Monday will result in serious delays, if even able to be done.
Clearly there are many other emergency preparation items that will be beneficial to us all...
Please offer your ideas & tips in the OPEN THREAD....
Be safe, everryone!!!!
(Oh, and make sure there is at least one bottle of wine around.....always helps to calm the nerves)
