After watching a football game on Pittsburgh's local CBS affiliate, I was dumbstruck to see the following misleading ad play on my television:

If you care about this election? Then "Show It"? Really, GOP-controlled Pennsylvania Department of State?

No wonder voters like the one joeotter encountered today while phone-banking are confused. The PA Dept. of State is intentionally trying to muddy the waters with this ad, and has been doing so for some time, apparently.

This was the first I'd seen of the ad, though, since I typically watch most of my television online. But I had the ole' tele on this afternoon, and my immediate response was, "What in the fucking fuck? That ID law was delayed until after the election."

This ad is gross, intentional deception, and these public service announcements, which apparently have been playing for weeks, should have been pulled long ago.

Sure, the ad subtly says you'll be asked, but not required, to show your photo ID. But that's done in the backdrop of actors proclaiming, "Show it!"

It's insane that phone-banking would be necessary to counter the government's misinformation campaign. But such is the reality here in Pennsylvania, where I will be phone-banking to do (or attempt to do) just that.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

Then why isn't there an ad SPECIFICALLY targeting and referencing the MISLEADING NATURE the message INTENDS to send?

I'm sorry but this stuff drives me nuts.  All this campaign money flowing out there and this is NOT being addressed?

I oculd find in a quick search on the subject. The ACLU tried, the judge ruled against them.

Commonwealth Court Judge Robert Simpson said that he would stick with an October 30 deadline requiring the state respond to the American Civil Liberties Union's complaint that the advertisements are misleading.

"The response time is reasonable under the circumstances," wrote Simpson....

          the Diarist says:

WHERE does it "subtly" say you'll be asked?

          The ad SAYS:

To vote in Pennsylvania on Election Day, you need an acceptable photo ID with a valid expiration date.
It does NOT say "you will be asked, but not required," either in audio or in text.  I watched the damned thing FIVE TIMES!  I take the word "need" to mean "required."  This ad is not misleading, it's blatantly false!

I think the Justice Department should be shutting down this deliberate attempt at illegal voter suppression, and seeking to prosecute those in the Pennsylvania Department of State responsible for this crime, including the Secretary of State.  This is also an obvious attempt to defy a court order, so contempt charges would also be appropriate.

I would also suggest that anyone living in Pennsylvania where these ads are being broadcast should file a fraud complaint with the FCC.

This is NOT legal.  It's Voter Suppression.  And it's Fraud.

that are palatable to American voters? Apparently, so hard that Republicans prefer to lie and cheat outright rather than try to do that.  I thought it was bad enough when candidates running for office would lie, but now elected officials are lying about the supposedly democratic voting process. Unbelievable.

this to the local officials right after new law passed.  They said it would take time to fix it.  I again called them after I saw it on local channels. They said the ads would be down soon. The dems in our area don't seem to care.  We're in Bucks County-8.  Repugs are going to wipe us off the map with all the dirty Corbett acts.  I am fed up with all of them.

  •  They're wasting their time. (0+ / 0-)

PA is sewn up (just look at the ads or lack of them), but since PA Republicans can't very well influence elections in other states they're being their usual jerky selves here.  I think the bigger issue that PA's Democratic Party is a worthless piece of shit from top to bottom, and they wouldn't lift a finger if Democratic voters were driven from their homes like Bosnians.
