Well I didn't buy that emergency radio.  I'm sitting here wondering.  I have warned everyone I could think of.  People don't seem that excited.

I wonder what level of freak out a Warning is.  I wonder if they will want an evacuation.  I am at sea level here.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

      ...not warning.

The Hawaii announcement really is a WARNING:

A TSUNAMI WARNING IS ISSUED FOR THE STATE OF HAWAII EFFECTIVE AT
      0709 PM HST.
THIS UPGRADE IS DUE TO THE SEA LEVEL READINGS
RECEIVED AND THE RESULTING CHANGE IN THE HAWAII TSUNAMI
      FORECAST.

AN EARTHQUAKE HAS OCCURRED WITH THESE PRELIMINARY PARAMETERS

         ORIGIN TIME - 0504 PM HST 27 OCT 2012
         COORDINATES - 52.8 NORTH  131.8 WEST
LOCATION    - QUEEN CHARLOTTE ISLANDS REGION

       LAT  - LATITUDE (N-NORTH, S-SOUTH)
       LON  - LONGITUDE (E-EAST, W-WEST)
TIME - TIME OF THE MEASUREMENT (Z IS UTC IS GREENWICH TIME)
AMPL - TSUNAMI AMPLITUDE MEASURED RELATIVE TO NORMAL SEA LEVEL.
IT IS ...NOT... CREST-TO-TROUGH WAVE HEIGHT.
VALUES ARE GIVEN IN BOTH METERS(M) AND FEET(FT).
PER  - PERIOD OF TIME IN MINUTES(MIN) FROM ONE WAVE TO THE NEXT.

NOTE - DART MEASUREMENTS ARE FROM THE DEEP OCEAN AND THEY
ARE GENERALLY MUCH SMALLER THAN WOULD BE COASTAL
               MEASUREMENTS AT SIMILAR LOCATIONS.

      EVALUATION

A TSUNAMI HAS BEEN GENERATED THAT COULD CAUSE DAMAGE ALONG
COASTLINES OF ALL ISLANDS IN THE STATE OF HAWAII. URGENT ACTION
SHOULD BE TAKEN TO PROTECT LIVES AND PROPERTY.

A TSUNAMI IS A SERIES OF LONG OCEAN WAVES. EACH INDIVIDUAL WAVE
CREST CAN LAST 5 TO 15 MINUTES OR MORE AND EXTENSIVELY FLOOD
COASTAL AREAS. THE DANGER CAN CONTINUE FOR MANY HOURS AFTER THE
INITIAL WAVE AS SUBSEQUENT WAVES ARRIVE. TSUNAMI WAVE HEIGHTS
CANNOT BE PREDICTED AND THE FIRST WAVE MAY NOT BE THE LARGEST.
TSUNAMI WAVES EFFICIENTLY WRAP AROUND ISLANDS. ALL SHORES ARE AT
RISK NO MATTER WHICH DIRECTION THEY FACE. THE TROUGH OF A TSUNAMI
WAVE MAY TEMPORARILY EXPOSE THE SEAFLOOR BUT THE AREA WILL
QUICKLY FLOOD AGAIN. EXTREMELY STRONG AND UNUSUAL NEARSHORE
CURRENTS CAN ACCOMPANY A TSUNAMI. DEBRIS PICKED UP AND CARRIED
BY A TSUNAMI AMPLIFIES ITS DESTRUCTIVE POWER. SIMULTANEOUS HIGH
TIDES OR HIGH SURF CAN SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASE THE TSUNAMI HAZARD.

THE ESTIMATED ARRIVAL TIME IN HAWAII OF THE FIRST TSUNAMI WAVE IS

                           1028 PM HST SAT 27 OCT 2012

MESSAGES WILL BE ISSUED HOURLY OR SOONER AS CONDITIONS WARRANT.

"My friends, love is better than anger. Hope is better than fear. Optimism is better than despair. So let us be loving, hopeful and optimistic. And we’ll change the world."

  •  I'd seek higher ground....especially if on Maui... (9+ / 0-)

Initial reports indicate that a wave of around three feet is anticipated with Kahului (Maui) likely to be impacted by a larger wave, possibly up to six feet.

Urgent action should be taken to protect lives and property and to evacuate from coastline or low lying areas.

Wow, this is the first I've heard of it, surprisingly and I live in  Honolulu.  Last year, when we were waiting for the Japanese tsunami I lived a couple of streets down from one of the tsunami sirens. It blared every hour from around 10p.m. to around 3 a.m. There was no way we could've missed that warning.

Haven't heard the sirens go off, but probably they will soon. However, I don't live close them to now.

There have been no sirens and no emergency warning on my TV. I wouldn't have even known if my husband didn't happen to turn on the Weather Channel in the other room to check tomorrow's weather.

We're a little less than a mile inland and not in the evacuation zone, but we always hear the sirens. If people are supposed to evacuate then how are they going know?

They're saying it's looking at wave about 3ft; probably about like the one last year. Meaning it'll swamp Waikiki beach but not much more than that. At least what I know so far.

I'm 1 km in from the beach, and I'm outside the flood area.

Kauai looking at about 6ft; worse wave there!

Honolulu is having a lot of traffic accidents.

Remember if you are at high ground,  remain where you are.  This allows others in low lying areas to evacuate.

in honolulu - get to higher ground NOW!

police and civil defense and fire now pulled out of areas - folks are on their own, essentially.

go to highrise and go UP - ANYTHING to stay safe!

the beach at waikiki WATCHING the surf at only 4 minutes from the projected arrival!

the newscaster on livestream actually said, exasperatedly, would SOMEBODY go get those people off the BEACH!

another newscaster said that this takes people needed for safety away from what they need to do to rescue these idiots!

  •  Doesn't seem like this is a MAJOR tsunami though (1+ / 0-)

There was a Tsunami warning in Canada as well although warnings have been downgraded.

However, this is another reason why it's VITAL for President Obama to be re-elected.  More action needs to be taken to prevent global warming from worsening although I worry not enough action is being taken.

So this struck home with me. Thankfully there was no real damage with waves peaking at 1.9 feet at Kahului on the north side. I sent an email to our host, but I have not heard back from her. I am sure she has more important things to attend to.

We were staying right by the water in a place built back in the sixties. It is literally ten feet to the five foot sea wall from the back patio, they don't let you build that close to the shore anymore.
