I volunteered both days this weekend at OFA office in New Orleans. I witnessed a steady stream of volunteers Saturday and Sunday. Everyone was excited about the opportunity to aid in the effort to reelect President Obama. The group of folks was the typical New Orleans' gumbo with the most heartening aspect being all of the high school age people there. Several young men and women in that age group were clearly regulars at OFA NO.

One young man was asked during a call if he could vote yet and he replied, "No, but I want to do my part for this President."

More after the pumpkin squiggle...

I got a bit misty with pride several times witnessing the devotion and enthusiasm of these future voters who are already making their presence felt in the political process in 2012.

I made calls from home for President Obama in 2008. I wish I'd gone sooner to meet and work with fellow Obama supporters. If you can spare even a few hours, definitely volunteer especially at an OFA office in your area. I will be back to OFA NO over the next nine days helping out as much as I can!

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

I have also been campaigning for Obama in NOLA. In addition, I have actively supported Sarah Usdin for Orleans Parish School Board. She has a lifetime in teaching and public school education, and is poised to really help the city take advantage of the chance we have been given post-Katrina to change the nature of public schools in New Orleans. As a parent of a child attending Ben Franklin High School, the top rated public high school in the state, I am very careful in who I support for public education. Sarah Usdin is exactly what this city's public schools need. Google her website for more information, but I respectfully ask for your vote for her if you happen to be in her district (zips 70119, 70122, 70124). Thanks in advance for your support.

But will share your info with family and friends who live in Orleans. I met a few Ben Franklin students volunteering at OFA.

When I was growing up there and in my early twenties, the NO burbs were turning dark red.  For a while, Bob Livingston was my U.S. representative.  And several of my friends lived in Metairie (David Duke country!!)

One reason I left to go to graduate school in the RTP area of NC was that except for NO itself the entire state had turned hard right.  I still have one friend there (from Franklin) who expressed his disdain for the 47% long before Romney said it.

Glad to see there is some sanity down there, and that some Franklin students are part of it.

spending your days working for OFA.  As you have discovered and shared - this is by far the best way to get rid of those pre-election butterflies, by going and PERSONALLY GIVING YOUR TIME and effort you will know you did everything you could to bring about the victory on Nov. 6.  Take care!

    Still enjoying my stimulus package.

I thought they aren't quite as much a lost cause as white evangelicals?

But are now passing on the Democratic Party. Our only statewide Democratic officeholder is Mary Landrieu.
