According to their website, The HMS Bounty sent out a distress call last night at 18:30pm and the crew indicated they were abandoning ship. Reports say they were able to make it to life rafts and choppers were dispatched to pick them up. That's the good news.
The bad news is that the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation is reporting the ship has sunk :(
CBC story
The HMS Bounty was built and launched in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia in the early 1960's and has been featured in a whole pile of Hollywood movies from it's namesake to Pirates of the Carribbean.
Over the years I was fortunate enough to have been on the ship a dozen times or more as it took part in Parades of Sail and Tall Ship festivals. It's very sad to hear she's gone.
I hope they rebuild! I also hope they take a closer look at WHY it was in the location it was.
The Bounty has it's own website HMS Bounty and will be updating it as it goes.
6:34 AM PT: I am Updating this because there are no conflicting reports of the boat and the crew.
Some news agencies are saying that only 14 of the crew were picked up when 17 were confirmed on the boat. That means 3 are missing. AS well, some media are saying that the boat was still upright.
I guess we just need to wait and see at this point. I hope all are safe.
