The fire department also raised its priority standards. They are not going out to alarm calls any more, just 911 calls.
6:57 PM PT: To all the people who said 'Theres nothing to worry about'.... you was wrong.
7:00 PM PT: Bloomberg: Extraordinary flooding, trees down throughout city. Quarter of a million customers without power. Outages expected to last through morning or longer. A hospital without power (but its their fault they assured us their generators worked). 911 system receiving 10,000 calls per hour. Please Do not call 911 if not a life threatening emergency. You are putting other peoples lives at risk. Call 311, or text 311. Another problem is cars stuck on roads. Many are blocking emergency vehicles. Do not drive. I repeat, do not drive. All taxi and limo drivers get off the road immediately. It is very dangerous. You have to shelter in place. Stay where you are. Do not call 911 unless it is a life threatening emergency.
7:02 PM PT: Everyone seems to talk down to the people who stayed, especially these people in power. Christie did the same. Not everyone can afford to up and leave town. Not everyone has a place to go or a way to get there.
7:06 PM PT:
7:06 PM PT: Apparently this is an AP pic at WTC site:
7:09 PM PT:
7:11 PM PT: During Katrina, the focus was on New Orleans and a lot of other areas received no attention. That is probably the case here as well.
Also ABC just reported that TWC is now saying no water inside the stock exchange as of now.
7:12 PM PT: I repeat, no water in NYSE as of now. Lots of conflicting stories being reported online and by various media so its hard to know whats all true or not yet.
7:15 PM PT: Water rescues in progress in Sayersville, NJ
7:18 PM PT: Thousands of trees down in NYC.
Reports of upwards of 5 million without power on East Coast. (unconfirmed)
7:23 PM PT: 1.5 million without power in NJ.
7:27 PM PT: Both CBS and TWC have quoted MTA as saying all East River subway tunnels are flooded.
NYC is at a standstill in a way it probably has not been since 9/11, and hopefully will not be again for a very long time.
7:31 PM PT: From mayor Bloomberg - Power out at NYU Hospital.. moving patients out. Backup generators have failed
7:33 PM PT: More fire threat as buildings are ignited by transformers blowing. Firefighters unable to reach fires so they are spreading. Live video @ http://abclocal.go.com/...
7:35 PM PT: Cuomo, holding a news conference on Long Island where the lights flickered and his mike went in and out, said most of the National Guards deployed to the New York City area would go to Long Island.
"Long Island has become more and more vulnerable and the primary area of our concentration," he said.
7:36 PM PT: A brilliant comment from a wunderground poster 'captainktainer'
I want to express how very proud I am of the NHC and NWS for calling this so accurately. This has been a very difficult to forecast storm, the likes of which we haven't seen very often. Right now, parts of New York City that haven't flooded in anyone's memory are under multiple feet of water. We're still trying to find out what's happening to the subways. There's video of an explosion at 14th and the FDR Drive, which may or may not be a full-on cogeneration power plant. This has exceeded the worst case scenario that I had envisioned even a short five hours ago, but the NHC called it.
Nothing has enraged me more than the people who kept complaining and whining about how the media was playing up and "hyping" this storm, almost always the same people who accuse "alarmists" of "hyping" climate change. Well, to them I say: My friends in Manhattan are sitting in the dark, restricted to only an occasional text message when their phones happen to catch one of the few remaining towers, no longer hearing sirens because the emergency services crews have given up and pulled back. Ground Zero itself has estuary water pouring down in impromptu waterfalls. Atlantic City has been devastated, and one of my dear friends is very likely to find out tomorrow morning that her mother is dead - all because the mayor of that city joined the "Stop hyping the storm" brigade. Large swaths of New York City that should have been evacuated are now flooded, trapping people I care about and love, because the mayor didn't want to "overhype" the storm.
The entire East Coast save maybe Maine has been at least damaged by this storm, and large parts have been devastated - and we're still not done. This is something that the NHC and others forecasted, and all I heard on this blog from the usual suspects was "It's overhyped." I hope that other people remember what they had to say, and apply at least the same skepticism to them as they applied to the sound science that saved many lives and could have saved even more.
7:38 PM PT: 1 firefighter dead in line of duty in Connecticut (need confirmation on state). No other details as of yet.
7:41 PM PT: Officials saying 7 days or more until power is restored. This will have election effects.
nassau county roads all closed. Thats over a million people who cannot go anywhere.
7:45 PM PT: Many, many, many homeless shelter in low lying areas, or even in the subways and drainage tunnels themselves. These people do not have access to media, and obviously have no way to evacuate and nowhere to go if they did. They also do not have cellphones to call for help. Lets not forget about them.
7:46 PM PT: A female was electrocuted around 8 p.m. Sunday in the New York City borough of Queens when she stepped into a puddle, police spokeswoman Kellyann Ort said. Her death raises the U.S. toll from the storm to at least 11, including six in New York. Sandy killed at least 67 people in the Caribbean as it moved north, most of them in Haiti.
7:51 PM PT: MTA @MTAInsider
Again: rumors are wrong. There is no timetable for subway reopening. Rumors of one week are just that: rumors.
MTA @MTAInsider
Rumors are wrong. The MTA cannot assess damage until Tuesday. It is way too early for a subway reopening timetable.
MTA @MTAInsider

7:54 PM PT: MTA @MTAInsider

7:56 PM PT: Any report of 19 electrical workers trapped in a station are false according to the media.
8:01 PM PT: NYU Hospital still under evacuation after backup generators fail. No word on #'s as of yet. Not a good situation.

8:12 PM PT: Coast Guard helicopters being requested to help in rescue efforts. Many residents trapped in Nassau County according to county manager Edward Mangano,
8:17 PM PT: I'm greatly concerned about the lack of news from Atlantic City. And Christie said he will not even begin rescue efforts until 7 am. That 'youre on your own'.
8:19 PM PT: Officials in Susquehanna County say an 8 year old boy was killed when part of a tree fell on him outside a home near Montrose.

Elsewhere in New York City, emergency backup power failed and 10 feet of water flooded the basement of NYU Langone Medical Center, prompting the evacuation of 260 patients. Nurses manually pumped air to the lungs of those on respirators.
Atlantic City in New Jersey became an extension of the Atlantic Ocean. Seaweed and ocean debris swirled in the knee-deep water covering downtown streets.
Superstorm Sandy's wrath
And in Connecticut, the emergency management office sent out an ominous tweet to trapped residents: "If u find urself surrounded by H2O, call 4 help if u can & then get 2 highest level of home. Hang a white sheet out a street side window."
Tue Oct 30, 2012 at 4:29 AM PT: Just a reminder that this is why we need more first responders, not less. Disaster relief and climate change questions need to be thrown at Mitt from now until the end of time/the elections. Whichever comes first.
Tue Oct 30, 2012 at 4:41 AM PT: Not a lot of news out of Atlantic City as of yet but heres a little story

The UN is warning that flooding and unsanitary conditions could lead to a sharp increase in cases of cholera, while aid workers are worried that extensive crop damage will mean that food prices will rise.
Extensive damage to crops throughout the southern third of the country, as well as the high potential for a surge in cases of cholera and other water-borne diseases, could mean Haiti will see the deadliest effects of Sandy in the coming days and weeks.
